The Advertisers Association of Nigeria (ADVAN) has entrusted one of the country’s most accomplished brand strategists and corporate communications professionals, O’Tega Ogra, with the responsibility of steering the association into its next phase of growth, following his election as President.
His emergence marks more than a routine leadership transition. Rather, it represents the culmination of an extensive career that has spanned brand management, strategic communications, corporate affairs, digital engagement, public policy and global advertising leadership, positioning him among the most influential voices shaping Nigeria’s marketing communications landscape.
Ogra succeeds Osamede Uwubanmwen, whose administration strengthened industry collaboration, advocacy and stakeholder engagement. However, expectations surrounding the new President extend beyond continuity.
Industry stakeholders are looking to Ogra to leverage his diverse experience across the private sector, government and international advertising circles to deepen ADVAN’s influence both locally and globally.

Accepting the responsibility, Ogra paid glowing tribute to his predecessor, acknowledging the solid institutional foundation already established while pledging to build on those achievements through stronger collaboration, innovation and strategic engagement.
He reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the interests of advertisers by promoting professional excellence, strengthening partnerships across the marketing communications ecosystem and encouraging constructive dialogue with regulators.
Significantly, Ogra used his first remarks as President to advocate reconciliation rather than confrontation within the industry. According to him, sustainable progress can only emerge through mutual respect and continuous engagement between stakeholders.
Rather than prolonging disagreements, he urged industry players to return to the negotiating table, stressing that collaboration ultimately delivers greater value than conflict. That conciliatory message reflects a leadership philosophy that has consistently defined Ogra’s professional journey.
Long before assuming the presidency of ADVAN, he had built a reputation as a communications executive capable of navigating complex corporate, governmental and public affairs environments while fostering strategic consensus.
Today, Ogra simultaneously serves as Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Digital Communications, Engagement and New Media Strategy, where he provides strategic direction on digital communication, public engagement and government messaging.
His appointment to the Presidency underscored years of distinguished service within Nigeria’s corporate communications profession and reinforced his growing influence at the intersection of branding, governance and digital transformation.
Before joining the Presidency, Ogra had already established an enviable corporate career.
As Group Head of Corporate Communications at BUA Group, he played a strategic role in strengthening the reputation and visibility of one of Africa’s largest conglomerates, leading integrated communication initiatives across diverse business portfolios.
Earlier, he served as Head of Brand Management and Corporate Communications at Wema Bank Plc, where he spearheaded one of the institution’s most significant brand transformation programmes.
Under his leadership, the bank successfully repositioned its corporate identity, introduced a refreshed brand architecture and reinforced its market relevance within Nigeria’s highly competitive financial services sector.
Prior to that assignment, Ogra served as Corporate Communications Manager at Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), further expanding his expertise in corporate reputation management, stakeholder engagement and strategic brand communication.
Across these assignments, he steadily built a multidisciplinary career that combines brand strategy, digital marketing, crisis communication, corporate affairs, content development, event management, entrepreneurship, business leadership and digital innovation.
His professional accomplishments have equally earned international recognition.
Among several honours, Ogra was named among the Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to communications, branding and leadership.
More recently, his influence expanded onto the global stage following his election to the Executive Committee of the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA), the highest decision making body of one of the world’s most influential advertising organisations.
The appointment represented a landmark achievement not only for Ogra personally but also for Nigeria’s advertising industry, giving the country direct representation in shaping global conversations around advertising, marketing, media and brand governance.
ADVAN described the development as a significant milestone capable of amplifying Nigeria’s voice within international advertising circles while reinforcing Africa’s growing influence in defining the future of responsible marketing communications.
Beyond boardrooms and executive leadership, Ogra has also emerged as one of Nigeria’s most prominent advocates for responsible digital communication.
Over the years, he has consistently argued that technological advancement must be matched by appropriate governance frameworks capable of protecting the integrity of the digital information ecosystem.
Speaking during a televised interview monitored by MARKETING EDGE, Ogra warned that the rapid spread of misinformation, manipulated content and unverified information across social media platforms presents serious risks to national stability if left unchecked.
According to him, governments across the world have a legitimate responsibility to create regulatory frameworks that safeguard digital spaces while encouraging responsible public discourse.
He maintained that legislation must evolve alongside technological innovation, insisting that laws governing communication cannot remain static in an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, social media algorithms and rapidly changing digital platforms.
Rejecting suggestions that digital platforms should operate entirely without regulation, Ogra argued that protecting national interest remains a constitutional responsibility of government.
He observed that several jurisdictions already impose sanctions for harmful online conduct, adding that Nigeria must continue developing appropriate mechanisms capable of balancing freedom of expression with accountability and public safety.
Those perspectives have established him as an influential contributor to national conversations surrounding digital governance, strategic communication and public policy.
Consequently, his election as ADVAN President comes at a defining moment for Nigeria’s advertising industry, which continues to navigate rapid technological disruption, artificial intelligence, evolving consumer behaviour and changing regulatory expectations.
His emergence also follows another important milestone in his ADVAN journey. Before assuming the presidency, Ogra served as the Association’s Vice President, where he played a central role in strengthening industry engagement while helping position Nigerian advertisers within broader international conversations.
Industry observers believe that experience, combined with his government responsibilities and global advertising exposure, provides him with an uncommon perspective on the opportunities and challenges confronting contemporary marketing communications.
Meanwhile, the Association’s Executive Leadership Session, held after the election, reinforced the importance of strategic leadership in today’s business environment.
Delivering a keynote presentation, Dr. Doyin Salami, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of KAINOS EDGE Consulting Ltd., urged organisations to rethink traditional growth models as Nigerian consumers increasingly prioritise affordability over price inflation.
According to Salami, businesses must now compete by driving volume, improving operational efficiency, allocating capital strategically and developing a deeper understanding of evolving consumer behaviour rather than relying on repeated price increases to sustain performance.
Similarly, Crystal I. Berger, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of EBO and Vettify™, argued that trust has become the defining currency of modern brands.
As artificial intelligence transforms content creation, customer engagement and digital experiences, Berger maintained that organisations capable of investing in credibility, transparency and verification mechanisms would enjoy stronger competitive advantage in the years ahead.
She reminded business leaders that while visibility may attract attention, trust ultimately determines consumer preference, making reputation one of the most valuable assets organisations can cultivate in an AI driven marketplace.
Alongside Ogra’s emergence, ADVAN also elected a new Executive Council to support the Association’s strategic direction.
Gloria Nwabuike emerged as First Vice President, Maurice Igugu was elected Second Vice President, Seni Ogunkola became Treasurer, while Adeola Amosun was elected Publicity Secretary. Cassandra Uzo Ogbugh, James Odejimi, Martha Ojei Kayode, Omobolanle Osotule and Oge Maduakwu were also elected as Executive Council members, while Ediri Ose Ediale continues as Chief Executive Officer of the Association.
With O’Tega Ogra now at its helm, ADVAN begins a new chapter under a leader whose career has traversed corporate boardrooms, financial institutions, multinational business, government communications and global advertising leadership.
For many within the industry, his presidency represents more than a change of leadership. It reflects the arrival of a communications strategist whose professional trajectory, policy experience, international exposure and long standing commitment to advancing responsible advertising place him in a strong position to shape the future direction of Nigeria’s marketing communications industry.
