Nigerian Breweries marks 74 years of brewing greatness
Top brewer, Nigerian Breweries Plc, may not have rolled out the drums for the celebration of a 74-year historic entry into the Nigerian beer market due to the circumstances surrounding the general business climate. The company, however, appreciated its brand existence and the massive support by its teeming consumers and stakeholders.
With a remarkable and an intriguing history in the highly competitive Nigerian alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks market, the No 1 brewer, no doubt, has a cause to be thankful.
“Yesterday, we turned 74. Given the general mood, we decided not to have any celebration. But we also realise how important it is for us to say ‘Thank you Nigeria for 74 great years’. Cheers to a brighter future, together!” NB said on its LlinkedIn page.
For 74 years Nigerian Breweries has pursued a philosophy of brewing iconic and world class brands. It is indeed a milestone and another epochal event for a brand that has been known for brewing greatness.
“For 74 years, we built an enduring organisation with passionate people and exciting portfolio of brands across alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. We are committed to inspiring a better future for Nigeria. Happy Anniversay!”
Incorporated in 1946, the foremost brewer didn’t roll out the first bottle of its brand, the Star Lager, from its Lagos brewery until June 1949. Before the entry of Nigerian Breweries into the Nigerian market, market leaders in the sector were all imported brands with the absence of a locally produced beer. Heineken then went into technical agreement with United African Company (UAC), to birth what was then known as Nigerian Breweries Limited. The success of the agreement later brought in investments from other merchandise companies in Nigeria including John Holt, GBO, SCOA, CFAO and UTC who all took some equity interest in the new company. Operating in the largest market in Africa, Nigerian breweries became the market leader in the beer market through innovation driven by cutting-edge technology on a constant basis. Having conquered the beer market, the foremost brewer diversified its business and produced non-alcoholic drinks.
The various alcoholic and non-alcoholic brands on the stable of Nigerian breweries are leaders and major players in their various markets.
To bolster the strength of its brewing business, Nigerian Breweries embarked on the acquisition of a number of smaller breweries. This major decision led to increase in the number of brands on the stable of the brewer. Though some people have accused the company of killing competition by acquiring smaller brewing firms, but Nigerian breweries has always dismissed such; explaining that it has only helped some beer brands from going into extinction.
As a brand that considers itself a development partner with Nigeria, Nigerian Breweries has continued to live up to expectations of being a responsible corporate citizen. It has been involved in several corporate social responsibility driven initiatives. Its footprints on CSR dot the Nigerian landscape across geo-political zones. This has largely contributed to its brand equity and acceptance in the ever dynamic beer market. For decades, it has remained the market leader in the Nigerian beer market.
As a brand whose avowed core values are respect for individual, the society and the environment, Nigerian Breweries has been a truly Nigerian brand in all its campaigns and operations.
Indeed, it’s another time for Nigerian breweries to be over the moon to celebrate another milestone in its self-appointed mission of brewing greatness in Nigeria.
