Nigeria, US forge digital economy partnership

The United States Department of Commerce and the Nigerian Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy have identified key areas of collaboration with a view to bolstering digital economy.
This was contained in a joint press statement released on Friday by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo and Nigerian Minister of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani.
It revealed the potential of the digital economy, particularly in driving economic growth, job creation, and fostering an inclusive and sustainable digital future.
The initiative is part of the U.S-Nigeria Commercial and Investment’s MoU, recently signed by the U.S Secretary of Commerce and Nigeria’s Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Dr. Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite.
The partnership, aims to enhance collaboration in digital trade, innovation, and investment.
Key areas of cooperation include data protection, cross-border data transfers, and artificial intelligence (AI).
The partnership underscores the importance of data protection measures and secure digital infrastructure to facilitate innovation and secure data flows.
According to the statement, both Nations will explore cloud security collaboration and develop a trustworthy AI framework, with a focus on safe and ethical deployment.
Similarly, the statement highlighted the commitment to digital upskilling, particularly for under-represented groups, as part of the United States Digital Transformation with Africa initiative.
This includes promoting digital literacy and providing opportunities for the next generation of tech leaders and entrepreneurs.
“The U.S. and Nigeria’s joint efforts reflect a shared vision of leveraging digital technologies for sustainable development and economic growth, ensuring an inclusive digital transformation that benefits all citizens,” the statement reads in part.
