Nigeria partners with WIOCC to boost telecoms sector

The federal government of Nigeria has initiated a partnership with West Indian Ocean Cable Company (WIOCC) with a view to boosting the nation’s telecommunications sector.
This collaboration is coming barely 24 hours after the approval of a 50 percent hike in the telecom tariff, which has generated mixed reactions among Nigerians.
Disclosing the news of the partnership through his X handle on Wednesday, the Minister of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani said the key component of the deal is the WIOCC’s commitment to making significant investments in delivering last-mile connectivity to Nigerian homes and businesses.
This according to him, is a critical step that is expected to expand broadband access, enabling individuals and businesses to benefit from improved digital infrastructure.
“This collaboration is about prosperity because by meaningfully connecting our people, we give them a platform to increase productivity. As a government, we are open to collaborating with private sector players, and other relevant stakeholders, in our efforts to enhance the quality of broadband connectivity towards achieving sustainable economic growth and development,” the Minister wrote on X platform.
The partnership with WIOCC is part of the Nigerian government’s efforts to work closely with players in the private sector and other stakeholders to enhance broadband quality and effective coverage across the country.
