Multichoice shuns FCCPC, increases subscription by 15%

Barely a week after the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) ordered a price freeze on Multichoice and urged it to introduce an extra feature that allows subscribers to retain the same subscription fee for a minimum period of one year thus allowing consumers to enjoy better value for their money, the operator of DSTV and GOTV has announced a 15 percent increment in subscription for packages on both networks.
The announcement which took Nigerians by surprise is seen as an apparent disregard for the consumer protection commission.
While blaming inflation and business operations for the increment, Multichoice said the new fees will become effective on April 1.
“In light of the rising costs of inflation and business operations, we have had to review the price of our packages to keep delighting our customers with great entertainment, anytime and anywhere.
“Therefore, from April 1, 2022, a new pricing regime for both our DStv and GOtv packages will be in effect”, the company said in a statement on Tuesday.
In the new regime, DStv packages will now e N21,000 for Premium, N14,250 for Compact +, N9,000 for Compact, N5,300 for Confam, N2,950 for Yanga, 2,150 for Padi, N2,669 for Business and N2,900 for Xtraview + PVR.
GOtv package on the other hand will e N4,150 for Gotv Max, N2,800 for GOtv Jolli, N1,900 for GOtv Jinja and N900 for GOtv Lite.
Meanwhile, Tam Tamunokonbia, Director, legal service, FCCPC has said the commission is carrying out an investigation in response to subscribers’ complaints alleging abuse of dominant position by MCN.
It is hoped that the outcome of the investigation will assuage the pains of hapless Nigerians who groan under the pressure of what they term as an inequitable subscription regime.
