MTN Nigeria records 1.7million data subscription, maintains market dominance

MTN, Nigeria’s largest mobile telecommunication company, has added 1.74 million data subscribers thereby increasing its data network to 60.60 million from the 58.86 million it recorded in May, 2020, says a Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) report.

MTN with 78.78 million subscribers continues its dominance, extending the gap with Globacom and Airtel which have 52.57 million (26.82%) and 52.46 million (26.76%) subscribers respectively. MTN now has 40.17% of telephone subscribers in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, 9mobile emerged the sole loser of the operators, as the telco lost 114,004 in the month of June to stand at a total of 12.11 million users.

At the end of the period in view, MTN’s total data market share rose further to 60.60 million subscribers, while Glo had 37.97 million, followed by Airtel’s 37.57 million and 9mobile’s 7.10 million.

The total number of GSM subscribers in the country rose to 196.03 million, indicating an increase of about 4.1 million subscribers in June alone.

The NCC set the total amount of internet subscribers in the country at 143.32 in June.
