FG launches AI Collective to promote ethical, safe usage

The federal government has officially launched Artificial Intelligence Collective, an initiative designed to bring together experts from civil society, academia, technology and other sectors to collaborate and promote the development and safety use of AI for the benefit of the society.

The scheme which was launched in Abuja on Tuesday had in attendance tech expert, and top industry players who converged to drive a conversation around the subject.

According to Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy, who shared this information on his X handle, the initiative was undertaken to advance artificial intelligence in Nigeria.

While noting that the project is backed by several partners, he said the Nigeria AI Collective aims to create a robust AI ecosystem in the country. He identified ‘Luminate’ as one of its major supporters which has committed $1.5 million to bolster Nigeria’s efforts in AI development.

The Minister stressed that this financial backing will help strengthen the AI landscape, ensuring that innovation in the sector is aligned with societal well-being and ethical standards.

Tijani posited that the launch of the collective highlights Nigeria’s growing focus on leveraging AI to solve societal challenges while prioritizing safety, inclusivity, and ethical considerations.
