Embrace digital technology, FCCPC boss task youths

Babatunde Irukera, executive vice chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), has tasked Nigerian youths to embrace digital technology to meet up with the world at large.
He made this known at the just concluded 7th edition of the National Young Consumer Contest Awards 2023, with the theme: “Fair Digital Finance” in Abuja. The event was organized by commission of secondary and tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
The FCCPC boss urged youths to embrace good character, values, integrity, discipline and responsibility to succeed in life.
His words: “You may have heard on many occasions this saying, that the future belongs to you, the youth. To the young people, the future belongs to you. Why? You have heard your parents, teachers say it. Whether you know the meaning or not, the future indeed, belongs to you. Digital technology space belongs to you, especially given Nigeria’s population as the largest in Africa.
“There is an urgency in keying into the digital economy, especially by youths who constitute the majority of our population. Given the huge population of young people in Africa, it shows that the digital market is the future of Africa. Why is digital finance important? To direct your attention to the future.”
He explained that Nigeria has become a hub for digital companies, adding that six technology companies with a market capitalisation of $1 billion have been born in Nigeria in the last eight years.
“The biggest responsibility that will define whether you have succeeded is fiscal responsibility. Learning restraint and discipline and respect to resources. Fiscal responsibility is a factor in controlling corruption. So if the future is digital, and fiscal responsibility is an important part of your success, making you think digital markets is appropriate.
“It is much more here than anywhere in the continent. Nigeria is a respected as a country for technology start-ups in Africa
“We must be intentional and the young people must focus on this. We cannot catch up with the rest of the world by building new schools,” he said
