Angela Ukara-Makinwa, Fnimn, Frpa, has been honoured as the Outstanding Experiential Marketing Personality of the Decade at the 2026 EDGE Awards.
For some women, the journey to leadership is about finding a seat at the table. For Angela, the journey has been about what happens after getting there, which includes influencing the conversation, opening the room to others and helping to shape the table itself.
No doubt, that philosophy has quietly defined more than two decades of a career built around brands, people, experiences and leadership. Not only that, it has also shaped a professional journey that has moved across advertising, experiential marketing, corporate communications and broadcast media, while placing empathy, inclusion and commercial thinking at the centre of her work.

Consequently, when Angela Ukara-Makinwa stepped forward to receive the Outstanding Experiential Marketing Personality of the Decade award at the 2026 EDGE Awards, the honour represented far more than a glittering moment on an awards stage.
This is because, for a woman who has spent more than two decades helping brands find their voice, connect with people and turn ideas into experiences, the recognition offers a striking pause in a career that has rarely stood still.
More than that, it brings into the light a body of work that has steadily grown through changing brands, demanding clients, evolving agencies and an industry that has itself undergone remarkable transformation.
Behind the recognition is a professional whose influence has been built not merely through visibility, but through the ability to translate insight into experiences that people can see, feel and remember.

Over the years, she has led transformative work for major brands including Coca Cola, MTN, Interswitch, Airtel, Samsung, Reckitt and BAT, connecting business objectives with human experiences and cultural relevance.
Beyond individual campaigns, her career reflects a broader understanding of what experiential marketing can achieve. So, rather than treating brand experience as a standalone activity, she has approached it as a meeting point between strategy, creativity, people and business growth.
Also, at EXP Marketing Nigeria, where she serves as Director, Client Engagement, Strategy and Creative, that philosophy continues to shape her work.
Aside that, she leads integrated client engagement, strategy and creative functions, develops high impact campaigns, creates new business opportunities and strengthens relationships between brands and their agency partners.
Yet, perhaps, what makes her leadership particularly distinctive is the balance between commercial ambition and genuine concern for people. Her approach combines strategic thinking with emotional intelligence, allowing her to build teams, develop talent and create environments where people can contribute meaningfully to organisational goals.

Similarly, earlier chapters of her career further broadened that experience. For instance,at FCMB Plc and AIICO Insurance Plc, she held leadership responsibilities in marketing and corporate communications, gaining valuable insight into brand building within highly regulated and performance driven sectors.
Before then, her foundation in broadcast media at Clapperboard TV and Disc Cable Television helped shape her understanding of storytelling, audiences and the power of creating connections.
Indeed, those experiences would later become important ingredients in her approach to experiential marketing, where the success of an idea often depends on how effectively it connects with people.
Meanwhile, her influence has extended beyond the walls of the organisations she has worked with.
Meanwhile, as Vice President of the Experiential Marketers Association of Nigeria, EXMAN, she has played an important role in strengthening professional standards and contributing to the direction of the experiential marketing industry.
Notably, her EXMAN journey includes her earlier role as the association’s first female General Secretary, before becoming Vice President. Her progression reflects both professional growth and a willingness to participate in shaping the structures within which the industry operates.

Similarly, she serves as the first and current Chairperson of the NIMN Investigative Panel, while also contributing as a jury member for leading industry awards and as a convener and moderator at the Lagos Business School MEMP Programme.
Truly, these responsibilities reveal another dimension of her leadership, which is nothing but service. For Ukara Makinwa, occupying a position of influence is not simply about personal advancement, but also about helping to create stronger systems and making sure that different perspectives have room to influence decisions.
In other words, that belief is particularly evident in her advocacy for women and diverse leaders. Significantly, she has consistently argued that getting a seat at the table should not be regarded as the final achievement. Crucially, the greater responsibility, in her view, is to lead at the table and ensure that others are not permanently left outside the room.
In practical terms, that means creating inclusive cultures where diverse perspectives are valued, younger professionals are supported and teams are encouraged to challenge conventional thinking.

Again, it also means moving beyond traditional ideas of mentorship towards active sponsorship, where established women deliberately create opportunities for emerging talent to participate in important conversations and decisions.
Furthermore, her leadership philosophy speaks to a changing workplace in which empathy, psychological safety, flexibility and inclusion are becoming increasingly important to organisational success.
Interestingly, her ability to combine these qualities with strategic vision has helped her inspire teams while keeping them aligned with broader business objectives.
For the industry, that combination matters. This is because, equally important, experiential marketing depends heavily on understanding people, yet it also demands discipline, innovation, resilience and the ability to adapt when circumstances change.
However,Ukara Makinwa’s career has brought these qualities together across brands, agencies and professional platforms. In addition, her recognition at the EDGE Awards therefore carries a significance beyond the trophy itself. Subsequently, it acknowledges years of contribution to a discipline that continues to evolve.
This is while also celebrating the person behind the work, a professional known for her charm, an ever smiling presence and a leadership style that makes room for both ambition and humanity.
Clearly, her list of recognitions already reflects this influence. Alongside these, she has received the Marketing Icon Award at the Nigerian Marketing Awards and has been recognised among the Top 50 Influential Women in Marketing and Communications, Guardian’s 100 Inspirational Women in Nigeria and the Top 50 Changemakers.
Still, the Outstanding Experiential Marketing Personality of the Decade honour places a different spotlight on her journey. Definetely, it brings together years of work across multiple disciplines and recognises the consistency with which she has helped brands move from messages to meaningful experiences.
Academically and professionally, she has built the foundation to match that experience. She holds a Master’s degree in Public and International Affairs from the University of Lagos, a degree in Mass Communication from Lagos State University and a Diploma in Public Relations. In the same vein, she is also a Fellow of the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria and a Fellow of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria.
Above all, the award tells a story about more than one successful career. On the other hand, it tells the story of a woman who has spent years helping brands become more relevant to people, while simultaneously using her own platforms to make leadership more inclusive.
For Ukara Makinwa, the table was never meant to be a place to sit quietly. It was a place to contribute, to question, to build, to lift others and, when necessary, to create another table altogether.
What makes the moment even more compelling is that Angela Ukara-Makinwa does not appear to be slowing down. With the same warmth in her smile, the same curiosity in her thinking and the same energy with which she has embraced every new chapter, she continues to look ahead.
For a woman with such depth of experience, there is no sense of arrival, only another horizon. Yes,the award may have placed her name in the spotlight, but her spirit remains fixed on what comes next, which is bigger ideas, braver conversations, stronger teams and a more inclusive industry.
Perhaps that is the real beauty of the moment as she now has another experience to call her own by standing in the light and seeing an industry acknowledge the journey.
No doubt, the applause may fade, the lights may dim and the trophy may eventually find its place on a shelf. Yet the energy behind the woman remains alive and if her journey so far is anything to go by, this is not a closing chapter. It is another beginning.
Congratulations to Angela Ukara-Makinwa, on being honoured as the Outstanding Experiential Marketing Personality of the Decade. May this recognition become another bright marker in a journey that still has many more rooms to enter, tables to build and experiences to create.
