DSTV hosts ‘Road to MAMA’ party in Lagos
Absolut Vodka and Google, in association with DStv and MTN are sponsoring the 2016 edition of MTV Africa Music Awards(MAMA) which holds in The Ticketpro Dome, Johannesburg, South Africa, on Saturday, October 22, 2016.
Meanwhile, a dazzling line-up of artistes is set to headline Lagos’s annual ‘Road to MAMA’ party, taking place at the Hard Rock Cafe, Lagos on Sunday, October 2.
The major act for the night is reggae-dancehall star Patoranking, who wowed Durban music fans at last year’s ceremony and took home the award for MAMA ‘Best New Act’. Also performing at the party are Nasty C, Ycee, Skales, Runtown, Koker and Simi. The DJs for the party are Xclusive, Humility, Kaywise, Hazan and Ttb.
There will be added excitement at this year’s edition, as MTV Base will be revealing nominees in two parts: some on September 21 in Johannesburg, and seven other categories, including ‘Best Female’, ‘Video of the Year’ and ‘Artist of the Year’ in Lagos on October 2.
Over 15,000 fans are expected at the event venue.
MAMA recognises and rewards African and international talent and achievement with the most impact on African music and youth culture over the previous year. The ceremony will feature outstanding performances from African and international artists along with the show’s signature cross-genre and cross-border collaborations.
The award ceremony will celebrate African talent across 18 award categories, including ‘Best Male’, ‘Best Female’, ‘Listener’s Choice’ and ‘Best Group’. The contribution of artists from Portuguese and French-speaking countries in Africa will also be recognised in the ‘Best Lusophone’ and ‘Best Francophone’ categories. Additional categories include the ‘Africa Re-Imagined’ Award and ‘Personality of the Year’.
First staged in 2008, some past recipients of the MAMAs include 2Face Idibia, Davido, D’Banj, Flavour, Clarence Peters, P-Square, Tiwa Savage,Yemi Alade,Lupita Nyong’o, Fally Ipupa, Mafikizolo and Sarkodie.
