Banga to join growing list of Indians occupying powerful global offices

Following the resignation of David Malpass, the United States has nominated Ajay Banga, current Vice Chairman at General Atlantic, and former President of Mastercard to be President of the World Bank.
If elected, Banga will join a growing list of Indian-origin people occupying powerful global offices and make history as the World Bank’s 14th President.
According to U.S President Joe Biden, Banga who has spent more than three decades building and managing successful, global companies, is uniquely equipped to lead the World Bank at this critical moment in history.
Over the course of his career, he has become a global leader in technology, data, financial services and innovating for inclusion, serving in different capacities including Honorary Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce, advisor to General Atlantic’s climate-focused fund– BeyondNetZero, and Chairman of Exor and Independent Director at Temasek among others.
He is also a former member of the National Committee on United States-China Relations, co-founder of The Cyber Readiness Institute, Vice Chair of the Economic Club of New York and served as a member of President Obama’s Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity, and past member of the U.S. President’s Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations.
In 2022, Rishi Sunak made history as UK’s first Indian-origin Prime Minister. Sunak was born in Southampton to parents of Indian descent. Kamala Devi Harris became the first woman and first coloured Vice President of the United States of America. Harris was born to Indian and Jamaican parents in California.
Besides politics, Indian-origin CEOs are also currently leading some of the world’s most successful companies in a variety of sectors including technology and healthcare.
In tech, Neal Mohan is the latest to join the growing list of Indian-origin heads of global tech giants. Mohan is all set to take over as the new CEO of YouTube after Susan Wojcicki announced her resignation this February. In 2022, public relations giant Ogilvy also announced the appointment of Devika Bulchandani as its Global Chief Executive Officer.
Satya Nadella, the executive chairman and CEO of Microsoft, is an Indian-born American business executive. He became the CEO of Microsoft on February 4, 2014. CEO of Alphabet Inc. and its subsidiary Google, Sundar Pichai is one of the popular names in the information technology field across the globe.
Arvind Krishna is an Indian-American business executive and is serving the role of CEO of IBM since April 2020.
