Artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries once considered beyond the reach of automation, and the beauty sector is now witnessing one of its most groundbreaking innovations.

This time, Nigerian-American engineer and Harvard graduate, Yinka Ogunbiyi, is leading that transformation with a pioneering invention that promises to redefine professional hair braiding.

Ogunbiyi has successfully raised $7 million in seed funding to accelerate the commercial rollout of HaloBraid.

Significantly, an AI-powered braid-assist robot widely described as the world’s first patented robotic system built specifically to support professional hairstylists rather than replace them.

The investment round attracted major venture capital firms led by Seven Seven Six, the investment company founded by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, while AlleyCorp and Bling Capital also participated in the financing.

Consequently, the startup has rapidly gained commercial momentum, with more than 7,000 professional salons already joining its growing waiting list ahead of its market launch.

Unlike conventional automation designed to eliminate human involvement, HaloBraid functions as a collaborative assistant.

Specifically, the robotic system performs the repetitive mid-length braiding process that consumes the largest portion of a braiding session and often places considerable physical stress on hairstylists.

Meanwhile, professional braiders continue to handle the more creative and technical aspects of the service, including hair sectioning, foundation braiding and the final finishing touches.

Remarkably, the inspiration behind the innovation emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic.

After spending four days installing her own knotless braids, Ogunbiyi recognised the enormous amount of time and physical effort required for the process.

Again, determined to find a smarter solution, she transformed that personal experience into a technological opportunity.

Subsequently, she partnered with co-founder David Afolabi to design HaloBraid, combining biomechanics, robotics and artificial intelligence to address one of the beauty industry’s most labour-intensive tasks.

According to Ogunbiyi, the robot is intended to enhance, not diminish the salon experience.

“I don’t think anything will get lost from the experience. If anything, it enriches it. Technology simply assists with the repetitive movements that consume the most time and place the greatest strain on the body,” she explained.

Furthermore, the company believes the innovation could significantly improve salon productivity by enabling beauty professionals to attend to more clients each day.

However, this is while simultaneously reducing repetitive strain injuries that often shorten careers in the industry.

Industry observers also view HaloBraid as another striking example of artificial intelligence steadily expanding into unexpected sectors.

From healthcare and manufacturing to education, finance and now hairstyling, AI is increasingly becoming a practical partner in everyday human activities.

As the global beauty industry embraces smarter technologies, HaloBraid could represent a defining milestone in the evolution of professional hair care.
