Coca-Cola, Facebook, IBM, others condemn attack on U.S Capitol
Following the Georgia senate run-off and the recently concluded U.S elections which resulted in a mob attack led by supporters of President Donald Trump on the U.S capitol, Trade groups, Top American companies, and global brands like Coca-Cola, Apple, Facebook, Google, IBM have aired their reactions on what has been tagged “a threat to America’s democracy.”
The mob breach which was incited against the ceremonial counting of the electoral votes to confirm President-elect Joe Biden’s win, left four people dead during the attack on the nation’s capital.
The Coca-Cola Company in a published statement said: “For nearly 250 years, the United States of America has stood as a beacon for democracy, shinning a light for the world on how differing perspectives and ideas can strengthen the society. We are all stunned by the unlawful and violent events that unfolded in Washington D.C. With the election results now certified, we have faith in America’s democratic institutions to ensure a peaceful transfer of power and allow the U.S to move forward together as one nation.
IBM, an American multinational technology and consulting company reacted saying: “IBM condemns today’s unprecedented lawlessness and we call for it to end immediately. These actions have no place in our society, and they must stop so our system of democracy can work.”
Facebook explained the risks involved in permitting President Trump’s continuous use of its platform. The social media giant disclosed that a temporary ban has been placed on the outgoing President’s Facebook and Instagram accounts.
“We are extending the block we have placed on his Facebook and Instagram accounts indefinitely and for at least the next two weeks. Let us speak for the leadership team in saying what so many of us are feeling. We are appalled by the violence at the Capitol today. We are treating these events as an emergency. Our Elections Operations Center has already been active in anticipation of the Georgia elections and the vote by Congress to certify the election, and we are monitoring activity on our platform in real time.”
“We’re continuing to monitor the situation and will take additional measures if necessary to keep people safe,” Facebook added.
