MTN Group has announced the appointment of Ikenna Ikeme as Executive for Group Regulatory Affairs, effective September 7, 2026, as part of two internal executive changes aimed at strengthening the telecommunications group’s leadership capabilities ahead of its Ambition 2030 strategy.

Ikeme will move from his current role as General Manager of Regulatory Affairs at MTN Nigeria to take on a group-level regulatory leadership position, where he will oversee the company’s regulatory agenda across its markets spanning the African continent and beyond.

The appointment brings more than 30 years of cross-sector experience to the group’s regulatory function. Ikeme’s career spans telecommunications, banking and insurance, with expertise in regulatory affairs, public policy, compliance, stakeholder engagement and business transformation.

This breadth of experience positions him to navigate the increasingly complex regulatory environments MTN faces across its operating markets.

Ikeme’s elevation from a country-level role at MTN Nigeria to a group-level executive position reflects the growing strategic importance of regulatory affairs within MTN’s business model. It also signals the group’s recognition that relationships with telecommunications commissions, competition authorities, data protection regulators and spectrum management bodies are no longer peripheral compliance functions, but central drivers of commercial performance and market access.

MTN Nigeria, from which Ikeme is being elevated, has itself been at the centre of several significant regulatory developments in 2026. These include the NCC-CAC directive on shareholder ownership disclosure, the conditional approval of MTN’s proposed acquisition of IHS Towers, and the ongoing resolution of the FCCPC’s airtime lending regulations following the suspension of Xtratime.

Consequently, appointing a seasoned regulatory leader with deep Nigerian market experience to a group-wide role carries implications not only for MTN’s internal governance, but also for how the group manages its most commercially significant African markets going forward.
