The Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, has called on journalists and other media stakeholders to intensify efforts in protecting the integrity of information.

Equally, he warned that the growing spread of fake news and misinformation poses a serious danger to democratic governance and public trust.

Omotoso made the call while representing Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, at the 4th Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture organised by the Nigerian Guild of Editors at the Sheraton Hotel, Lagos.

Addressing participants at the event, the commissioner underscored the indispensable role of credible journalism in safeguarding democracy.

He therefore urged media professionals to remain unwavering in their commitment to factual reporting, ethical standards and responsible communication.

According to him, truth, accuracy and accountability must continue to define journalism, particularly at a time when false narratives increasingly shape public discourse.

Furthermore, Omotoso paid glowing tribute to the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande, describing him as a distinguished journalist, an exceptional public administrator and a selfless leader whose enduring contributions have continued to influence both the media profession and public service.

He noted that Jakande’s remarkable leadership, visionary governance and unwavering dedication to service remain enduring benchmarks for generations of journalists, public officials and aspiring leaders.

Consequently, he urged Nigerians, especially media practitioners, to preserve and advance the values that the late elder statesman embodied throughout his lifetime.

In addition, the commissioner stressed that combating misinformation requires collective responsibility.

He maintained that journalists, government institutions and members of the public must work together to promote verified information, discourage the circulation of falsehoods and reinforce public confidence in the nation’s democratic institutions.

The annual memorial lecture, organised by the Nigerian Guild of Editors, continues to celebrate the life, ideals and enduring legacy of the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande while providing a platform for critical conversations on journalism, governance and national development.
