X has finished rebuilding its Android app from the ground up after a year-long engineering effort, with head of product Nikita Bier describing the work as one of the company’s biggest technical projects since Elon Musk acquired Twitter.

In a post on Monday, Bier said the new Android version was rewritten from scratch to deliver a smoother and more reliable experience for users.

She added that the overhaul was also meant to give the company a stronger foundation for faster product development, noting that “many things will hit Android first” going forward.

The rebuilt app is designed to improve core functions such as scrolling, loading and notifications, while also setting the stage for new features to arrive more quickly on Android than on other versions of the app.

Bier said the team is still working through a few unfinished areas, including support for Spaces and better performance on older Android devices, but acknowledged that “there are still some rough edges.”

The Android rebuild became a priority last year after X saw a sharp rise in Android downloads. That shift mattered because Android remains the dominant mobile operating system globally, and X has long aimed to expand its role beyond a social platform into a broader “everything app” with services that include messaging and payments.

The update also fits into X’s wider effort to rebuild its product image after years of turbulence marked by staff cuts, moderation concerns, advertiser pullback, user losses and platform bans in some markets. At the same time, the company has been pushing more creator-friendly tools, including original content incentives and video features, as it works to deepen engagement and attract brands.

The new Android app is now available through the Google Play Store.
