Nigeria has taken a significant step toward strengthening its digital infrastructure as the Federal Executive Council has now formally approved the implementation of a GIS enabled alphanumeric digital postcode system for the country.

Consequently, this approval immediately signals a deliberate move by the government to modernise the nation’s addressing architecture while simultaneously reinforcing the broader framework required to support Nigeria’s expanding digital economy.

Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, disclosed the development on his LinkedIn page, thereby providing official confirmation of the policy direction and clearly outlining the strategic intention behind the initiative.

He explained that the approval forms part of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Strategic Blueprint and, more importantly, directly aligns with the ministry’s ongoing efforts to modernise key national systems through technology driven innovation.

According to the minister, the approval was granted by the Federal Executive Council under the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu. As a result, the decision now establishes a strong policy foundation for the nationwide rollout of the digital postcode system while also reinforcing the administration’s broader commitment to digital transformation across critical sectors of the economy.

Tijani explained that the initiative will introduce a modern geospatially intelligent addressing system that will actively improve location accuracy across Nigeria while simultaneously enabling faster and more reliable mail and parcel processing nationwide.

In practical terms, this means the system will directly strengthen the operational efficiency of Nigeria’s postal ecosystem while also supporting the seamless identification of locations across the country.

The project is being executed in collaboration with the leadership of Nigerian Postal Service, led by the Postmaster General, Tola Odeyemi, whose team worked on developing the system.

Notably, this collaboration underscores the coordinated institutional effort required to deliver a nationwide digital addressing framework capable of supporting both public and private sector operations.

Beyond strengthening postal operations, the minister noted that the digital postcode system will play a broader role in national development because it will actively support improved planning, faster emergency response, and more efficient logistics and e commerce operations.

Furthermore, by providing precise location identification, the system will enable organisations and government institutions to respond more quickly and effectively to operational demands.

He added that the system will also enhance the delivery of government services by ensuring a more accurate and reliable national addressing framework.

Consequently, public service delivery will benefit from improved coordination, while citizens and businesses will experience more efficient interactions with government systems.

Tijani further explained that as Nigeria’s digital economy continues to expand, foundational infrastructure such as a digital postcode system will become increasingly critical because it will actively connect people, businesses and services more effectively across the country.

In addition, such foundational systems will strengthen the digital backbone required to support innovation, commerce and national development.

According to him, the approval represents another milestone in the government’s efforts to build the enabling systems required to support a modern, inclusive and globally competitive digital economy.
