NIPR boss decries inability of PR practitioners to use digital platforms
Chairman of the Lagos State Chapter, Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Mr. Olusegun McMedal, has decried the inability of most Public Relations practitioners in the country to tap into the huge opportunities offered by digital platforms, due to their poor knowledge of the internet.
He disclose that most PR practitioners were lagging behind in the use of digital media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Smartchart, Googlechart, WhatsApp, SnapChat amongst others that have become indispensable tools for success in the profession.
McMedal said this today during a speech at the two-day Lagos Digital PR Summit with the theme: ‘New Media: Public Relations Practice in Networked Communities’ at the Nigerian Institute of Management, Lagos. He disclosed that only a very negligible percentage of PR practitioners actually know how to use the social media, hence their inability to leverage it for maximum impact during campaigns.
”It is primarily because most of the practitioners don’t know how to use it. They are still used to the traditional media. This is why the biggest people online are not PR practitioners.
“We want them to learn it and be able to use it so that they can enhance our practice, so that they can enhance our campaign returns. The focus of the summit is to aggregate collective voice, get ideas on the best way, our practitioners can leverage on the new media for our practice”he added.
Also speaking at the summit, Chairman/CEO, Zinox Technologies, Mr. Leo Stan Eke, explained that digital platforms have opened up a wider business space for everybody including PR practitioners to leverage on the potentials it offers.
“The power of the social media is real. Everybody can make use of it. As PR practitioners, you have a better platform to use the social media to your advantage” he stressed.
