Wazobia rewards APCON, media agencies for support

Ten years after it pioneered Nigeria’s first Pidgin English radio, Wazobia FM has rolled out drums to celebrate what has turned out to be a great success and ground breaking innovation in the annals of Nigeria’s radio broadcasting.

The radio station recently held what it called the Ogbonge Award at popular culture and lifestyle hangout, Terra Culture, where it hosted business partners, media agencies, broadcast regulators, celebrities and other stakeholders in the broadcast industry. The event was also attended by top management and staff of Wazobia FM, including its wave-making On-Air-Personalities.

Speaking with MARKETING EDGE at the event, Serge Noujaim, CEO AIM Group noted that one of the successes of Wazobia FM is that it has contributed in making Pidgin English mainstream in Nigeria. He added that by broadcasting in Pidgin English, Wazobia has given a voice to the voiceless masses of Nigeria and given them a chance to play a role in important national debate.

“From our side, we ensure that we have proper content and high standards but at the end of the day, we understand that English is not one that everyone can understand especially when you are talking about topics such as politics. But with pidgin we are able to reach out to everyone. So that is the beauty of Wazobia,” he said.

Apart from celebrating its extraordinary success story and its pioneering role in Pidgin English broadcasting in Nigeria, Wazobia also seized the moment to reward and appreciate a number of organisations that have supported it in the last 10 years including media agencies and regulatory bodies.

Some of the organizations that were honored with anniversary plaques included Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON), Advertising Practitioners’ Council of Nigeria (APCON), Media Independent Practitioner Association of Nigeria (MIPAN), and Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria (AAAN). Others are MediaReach, Media Perspective, MediaSeal.

The event was packed with exciting entertainment sessions including music and comedy with occasional thrills from OAPs who took time to serenade guests with the history of their professional sojourn with Wazobia FM, and how the station’s drive and commitment to excellence and professionalism have created an environment that inspire staff to develop and deliver their best at all times.
