NGE tasks media practitioners on professionalism and business
Nigerian Editors have been charged to embrace the business side of the media industry to ensure that their establishments thrive.
The media managers were also challenged to acquire knowledge and become experience-enriched from their service years in case they eventually venture into business upon retirement.
A communiqué signed by the NGE President, Mrs. Funke Egbemode and General Secretary, Ms. Victoria Ibanga, at the end of its 13th All Nigeria Editors’ Conference (ANEC) and Extraordinary Convention in Port Harcourt, Rivers State at the weekend, states that there is a need for editors, while remaining professionally excellent, to explore other revenue yielding ventures or business prospects to ensure that life after their editorial assignments is not nightmarish.
The NGE also urged the government to, on its part, do more to ensure a conducive environment for the media to flourish against the backdrop of the fact that the media industry has been and is still experiencing a crisis of recession.
The communiqué urges Mass Communication departments and Journalism training institutions to include business courses in their curricular so as to prepare future editors for the business side of the media industry.
The media managers also urged the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN) and other media stakeholders to collaborate to ensure the setting up of newsprint production companies and resuscitation of the moribund one in Oku Iboku, Akwa Ibom State, to address the crisis of high cost of imported newsprint.
It appealed to the Federal and state governments to pay outstanding gratuities and pensions of retired Editors and other classes of retirees to make life after retirement less stressful.
The Guild commended the Nigerian Army and other security agencies for their efforts in curtailing activities of insurgents, militants and other groups threatening the peace and security of the country. It also expressed regrets over the encroachment on its land in Guzape, Abuja and appreciated the promise made by the FCT Minister to redress the situation.
The Guild expressed gratitude to the Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, for his magnanimity in hosting ANEC back to back successfully and applauded the significant level of infrastructure development recorded in the state under his watch.
The Guild did not forget to commended its members for their cooperation and support, which led to the successful amendment of its constitution.
The theme of the conference, which was declared open by the Governor Wike, was: “Balancing Professionalism, Advocacy and Business”, had Malam Ismaila Isa Funtua as Chairman of the opening ceremony with former Governor of Ogun State, Aremo Segun Osoba, as chairman of the conference.
The Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of The Interview, Mr. Azubuike Ishiekwene, delivered the keynote address while the Senate President and sister associations and unions like the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), and the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) delivered goodwill messages.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, the Surveyor-General of the Federation, Ebisintei Awudu, Governors of Bayelsa, Bauchi and Oyo States, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, the JAMB Registrar, Director General, Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE), all made presentations at the executive session of the conference.
The 2017 ANEC was also attended by publishers and media entrepreneurs, over 400 Nigerian editors from the print, electronic and online platforms, sundry public officers and administrators.
