New APCON Council Inauguration Holds next Week
Feelers emanating from the Nigerian advertising industry have revealed that the new members of the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) may be finally inaugurated early next month.
The new APCON council will be inaugurated by the newly appointed supervising Minister of Information, Mr. edem Duke, who doubles as the Minister of Culture & Tourism.
It will be recalled that the inauguration of the new APCON council had been put on hold for almost a year now following the resistant and protest of industry stakeholders to accept the imposition of a non-professional political appointee, Mr. Ngozi Emioma as the Chairman of the regulatory agency.
Emioma had earlier been pronounced the new APCON chairman following the completion of the tenure of office of former chairman, mr. Lolu Akinwunmi sometimes last year. The pronouncement however witnessed series of protestations by industry stakeholders who pointed out that the so-called appointment was in utter abeyance of the rules and regulations establishing APCON as a regulatory agency of government.
To drive home their points, the stakeholders, comprising, members of Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria (AAAN) outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN) Media Independents Association of Nigeria, (MIPAN) Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NIPAN) and Experiential Association of Nigeria (EXMAN) etc led special delegates to the presidency through the former Information Minister, Mr. Labaran Maku.
After several agitations and non-recognition of the then APCON chair designate, the federal government last month reversed itself as it announced the appointment of Mr. Udeme Ufot Group Chief Executive Officer of SO & U as a replacement for the controversial Prince Ngozi Emioma who is neither an advertising practitioner nor a member of any of the sectoral bodies.
Since Udeme Ufot’s appointment, the Nigerian advertising practitioners and all relevant stakeholders have heaved a sigh of relief as they are of the opinion that the new APCON chair is the right person for the job having served on the APCON council for decades aside being a veteran advertising professional.
However, no specific date has been fixed for the exercise but it can be authoritatively confirmed that the inauguration will hold before the rescheduled election dates.
