Lipton launches campaign to empower widows
Lipton Yellow Label Tea, a product from the stable of Unilever Plc, has launched #LiptonReasonsToSmile to empower widows in the country.
The company said the initiative was aimed at supporting over 1,000 Nigerian widows with care packs and giving them seed funds to start their businesses.
The Brand Manager, Lipton, Damilola Dania, said the campaign expected to be executed in states across Nigeria, will also give other customers the opportunity to get involved by buying at least a pack of Lipton between May 1 and June 16.
Dania said the campaign became necessary in view of the challenges faced by widows when they lost their breadwinners and might find it difficult to cater for themselves and their children.
She added that these women needed to be given a helping hand – a lifeline to create a better future for themselves and their communities in general.
She said, “We want to spotlight the plight of widows in our communities through this #LiptonReasonsToSmile initiative. Widows in most circumstances are saddled with the responsibility of providing for the entire family, financially and emotionally. Upon losing their husbands, several people indicate their commitment and support for them, but though the words sound sincere, we all go back to living our lives, sometimes forgetting to follow through on our promises – so nothing changes.
“Lipton believes in taking a moment to remember socially disadvantaged people, uplifting them, body, mind and spirit, because they matter. We want to use this opportunity to give them reasons to smile, in our own way. I encourage Nigerians to reach out to any widows they know today, say a kind word and render an act of service, in any way they can.
