Coca-Cola Foundation awards $94,000 grant to DoGood Africa
The Coca-Cola Foundation will be supporting DoGood Africa with $94,000 in funding to support the activities of plastic waste collectors in Nigeria.
In addition, a total of 300 jobs will be created through DoGood Africa’s recently launched “Waste to Wealth” project. The initiative will also benefit about 833 households.
According to reports, Nigeria currently produces 200,000 tonnes of plastic waste per year. At least 70% ends up in landfills, sewers, beaches and water bodies.
Earlier in February, speaking on the initiative, Nwamaka Onyemelukwe, Head, Public Affairs, Communications and Sustainability for Coca-Cola Nigeria, explained: “TCCF is committed to addressing the needs of the communities in Nigeria where we operate. We are proud to support DoGood.Africa in partnership with HB Imagino to create the type of change needed to improve people’s lives, build sustainable communities and enhance our environment for future generations”.
This waste, mainly polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, will then be transformed into food packaging and sold to the population. DoGood Africa will implement the project in partnership with HB Imagino, a management and logistics consultancy based in Lagos State, Nigeria. DoGood Africa plans to start collecting plastic waste on the Lekki axis in Lagos State. The initiative aims to collect 500 tonnes of waste in its one-year pilot phase.
Coca-Cola, through its foundation, aims to reduce its impact on the environment in Nigeria by recycling plastic waste.
By funding the Waste to Wealth initiative, soft drink giant Coca-Cola, The company supports plastic waste collection in other African countries, including Uganda where it recently allocated $30,000 to Care and Assistance for Forced Migrants (CAFOMI). The funds are earmarked for the implementation of a plastic waste collection programme.

While it focuses on ensuring projects are sustainable and empathetically alleviate poverty, the Waste to Wealth project is one of many that will be impactful to communities.
