Auto firms may pay up to £115tr in compensation over mis-sold cars
Some of the world’s biggest car manufacturers have found themselves in a £115tr lawsuit over mis-sold vehicles.
Automakers which include Volkswagen, Mercedes, Audi, Jaguar, Land Rover, Nissan, Peugeot, Porsche, and a host of others could be faced with an average payout of £12,000 in compensation to each diesel driver who purchased vehicles that were more polluting than they were led to believe.
According to reports, about 9.6million vehicles might be affected; this means that millions of diesel drivers could be in line for compensation.
This suit follows the 2015 diesel gate scandal when Volkswagen was found to have installed devices which could ‘cheat emissions testing’.
Although the manufacturers deny the allegations, several legal firms are beginning to win the interests of drivers. Firms like Leigh Day, Slater & Gordon and PGMBM already have nearly 400,000 motorists signed up.
Law firm Leigh Day is involved in court action against Volkswagen and Mercedes but is investigating claims against Audi, Citroën, Jaguar, Land Rover, Nissan, Renault, Peugeot, Porsche, Seat, Skoda and Vauxhall.
Other firms are looking at taking action against BMW, Fiat, Ford, Jeep, Alfa Romeo, Mitsubishi and Suzuki. All car makers deny the allegations.
In 2020, Daimler, which owns Mercedes-Benz, agreed to pay £1.2billion to resolve US government claims that it designed diesel vehicles to cheat pollution tests.
The EU also raided the offices of Fiat-Chrysler over claims some engines produced illegal levels of emissions.
Vehicles with this emission problem are mainly diesel-powered ones.
