Stanbic IBTC establishes vocational centre for young inmates
Stanbic IBTC Holdings PLC, over the years, has continued to effect and transform lives positively as a fulfilment of its corporate social responsibility, and it is against this background that the bank, in order to empower young inmates, has donated a vocational centre to one of its host communities, Borstal Training Institute, Abeokuta, Ogun State, as part of its Corporate Social Investment initiative.
The fully equipped vocational centre is a project put together by the Finance Department of Stanbic IBTC at BTI in Abeokuta, as a facility where young male inmates will be empowered with various skills acquisition trainings like carpentry, tailoring and ICT.
Commenting on what inspired the donation, Head, Sustainability, Stanbic IBTC Holdings, Omolola Fashesin, said: “At Stanbic IBTC, we pay strong attention to empowerment, being one of the pillars around which our CSI Initiative revolves. She also added that: “To achieve societal and economic empowerment, young people need the skills and resources to compete in markets, as well as fair and equal access to economic institutions. This is what we provide at Stanbic IBTC.”
Comptroller of Corrections, Ogun State Command, Mojeed Adeniran, while appreciating the bank for their impactful gesture, noted that the donation would help harness the skill development of the inmates, as it’s the duty of Correctional Centers to correct, build and empower them.
Also, Executive Director, Prisoners’ Right Advocacy Initiative, Ahmed Adetola Kareem, encouraged other corporate organizations to emulate the commitment to social and economic growth as demonstrated by the bank, while describing the donation as an Initiative that will transform the lives of the young inmate, and empower them to be better citizens.
Borstal Training Institute, popularly known as BTI, is the Nigerian Correctional Service’s juvenile arm, set up to correct, train, reform, rehabilitate, and reintegrate young offenders. The BTI facility located at Abeokuta is one of the three borstals in Nigeria, and it serves the entire Southern part of the country, while the other two are located in Kaduna and Kwara States.
