May & Baker offers help on hypertension
Scores of residents and passersby in Ikeja, Lagos state benefited from free medical screening, advice and treatment given by May & Baker Nigeria Plc to mark this year’s World Hypertension Day on May 17, 2019. Staff of the company with a retinue of medical personnel undertook a Walk for Life exercise through the major streets of Ikeja local government area to create awareness on the disease. They stopped at strategic locations where people were screened on blood pressure (BP) and body mass index (BMI). Some of the people who tested positive benefitted from free medical advice and drugs.
May and Baker staff were joined in the walk by staff of Ikeja local government led by the vice chairman , Hon Ypmi Mayungbe, and special adviser on health to the local government chairman, as well as representative of the Lagos State Commissioner of Health
The team paid a courtesy call on the chairman of Ikeja Local government, Dr. Mojeed Balogun where Mr. Nnamdi Okafor , Managing Director, May & Baker Nigeria Plc explained that the Walk for Life programme is an annual corporate social responsibility initiative of the company to give back a little to the society in which t operates. He said this year’s programme is designed to coincide with the World Hypertension Day to create awareness on the scourge of hypertension as well as offer a helping hand to residents. The disease of hypertension, he said is a major but silent killer because its complications lead to sudden death. He also noted that hypertension is responsible for thousands of death in our society some of which could be avoided with proper knowledge and management.
The chairman of the Ikeja Local government Dr. Balogun expressed the appreciation of the local government and the entire residents of Ikeja to May & Baker for the initiative. He said the programme would go a long way in alleviating the sufferings of many people who do not have the resources and knowledge to undertake regular blood pressure checks. He added that May & Baker has been a socially responsible corporate citizen of Ikeja local government area and urged the company to continue to produce quality products for which it has been known for many decades.
The theme for this years World Hypertension day is Know Your numbers which enjoins citizens to regularly check their BP and MBI to know when they are at risk.
