Tems makes history as the only Nigerian to win at the 2025 Grammy Awards

Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, a Nigerian Afrobeat songwriter and singer, has won her second Grammy Award at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony, which took place on February 2, 2025.
Tems shared her excitement on her X (Twitter) page after taking home the award for Best African Music Performance for her song “Love Me JeJe.” Notably, Tems is the only Nigerian Afrobeat artist to win Grammy award this year.
However, other Nigerian artists, such as Ayo Balogun (Wizkid) and David Adeleke (Davido), were also nominated in the same category as Tems.
While on stage receiving her award, accompanied by her mother and members of her family and team, Tems couldn’t contain her excitement and gratitude for the honor.
In her words: “Dear God, thank you so much for putting me on this stage and giving me this theme. I want to thank my team, Muyiwa, Wale, stylist Johnson Wright, Yvonne, Rochelle, Kayla, Ashanti, and Sarah. To God be the glory, because honestly, this has changed my life so much.”
It’s worth recalling that Tems won her first Grammy Award in 2023 for Best Melodic Rap Performance for her collaboration on “Wait for U” with Future and Drake.
This year, she was nominated in three categories: Best African Music Performance for “Love Me JeJe,” Best Global Music Album for “Born in the Wild,” and Best R&B Song for “Burning.”
Other Nigerian artists nominated for the 2025 Grammy Awards include Wizkid, who was nominated for Best African Music Performance for “MMS” (with Asake); Burna Boy, nominated for Best African Music Performance for “Higher”; Asake, nominated for Best African Music Performance for “MMS” (feat. Wizkid); Davido, nominated for Best African Music Performance for “Sensational” (with Chris Brown and Lojay); Yemi Alade, nominated for Best African Music Performance for “Tomorrow”; Rema, nominated for Best Global Music Album for “HEIS”; and Lojay, nominated for Best African Music Performance for “Sensational” (with Chris Brown and Davido).
