Editors set to host 2024 Annual Conference in Bayelsa
The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has announced that its 2024 Annual Conference will take place in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, from November 7 to 9. The announcement was made by NGE President, Mr. Eze Anaba, and General Secretary, Dr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren, in a statement on Monday.
This year’s event, known as the All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC), will be chaired by Prince Nduka Obaigbena, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of THISDAY/Arise Media Group. Nigeria’s Vice President, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, is expected to formally open the conference. Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State will serve as the Chief Host, with former Ogun State Governor, Chief Segun Osoba, and Vanguard Media Group’s Founder, Uncle Sam Amuka, named as Fathers of the Day.
In outlining the context of the conference, the NGE noted that the current federal administration, which took office in May 2023, has implemented significant reforms aimed at stabilizing and advancing the economy. The removal of fuel subsidies and reforms in the foreign exchange market have been key efforts in restructuring the economy. Additionally, the government has introduced temporary cash transfer programs to assist 15 million vulnerable households, while focusing on tightening monetary policy and emphasizing the Central Bank of Nigeria’s role in maintaining price stability.
Despite these reforms, the NGE pointed out that challenges persist. Nigeria, despite being Africa’s largest economy, struggles with limited opportunities for its citizens, as reflected in the country’s low human capital index and slow job creation. As many professionals seek better opportunities abroad, concerns over poverty, inflation, currency exchange rates, and rising energy costs continue to dominate national discussions.
The NGE emphasized that addressing these economic issues requires a comprehensive set of policies and strategies to tackle both immediate and long-term challenges. In addition, the media sector faces its own sustainability issues. Stakeholders are calling for mechanisms to ensure publishers and media houses receive fair compensation for their content and intellectual property, while adapting to changing market dynamics to generate diverse revenue streams.
This year’s ANEC will provide a platform for experts from various sectors—including energy, security, finance, regulatory bodies, Big Tech, and the media—to engage in discussions about solutions to the nation’s economic and media industry challenges.
