Bolt withdraws N6,000 bonus for drivers amid impending strike action in Lagos

In a move that has caught the attention of drivers and commuters alike, ride-hailing platform Bolt has decided to withdraw its N6,000 daily bonus for drivers just as an impending strike action looms in Lagos. This decision by Bolt has sparked concerns among drivers who heavily relied on the bonus as an incentive, potentially exacerbating the already tense situation in the ride-hailing industry.
The N6,000 daily bonus, which was previously offered to Bolt drivers, served as a significant source of income for many drivers who have faced numerous challenges in the industry. With the impending strike action planned by ride-hailing drivers in Lagos, the withdrawal of this bonus has added fuel to the fire, further exacerbating the grievances of drivers.
In a response to the withdrawal of the daily bonus, Comrade Jolaiya Moses, the treasurer of the Amalgamated Union of App-based Transport Union of Nigeria (AUATWON), said: “The N6,000 daily bonus was a lifeline for us. It helped us cover expenses and gave us an incentive to keep working. With its removal, many drivers are feeling demotivated and uncertain about the future. Some drivers have parked their cars. Everyone is going through a hard time.
Moses went on to say that the removal of the bonus was targeted at discouraging drivers from joining the impending strike. “The bonus is not part of our argument. It was a gimmick.”
The impending strike action, which has been organized by various ride-hailing driver associations in Lagos, aims to address a range of issues faced by drivers, including fare reduction, high commissions, and poor working conditions. The withdrawal of the daily bonus by Bolt has further added to the grievances of drivers, leading to increased tension in the industry.
