‘Killer’ juice causes scare in Kano
An unwholesome popular juice known as Piara juice, has been alleged to be the harmful drink that has killed about 10 while 400 others have been hospitalized. The situation has sent the ancient city into panic and confusion.
In a recorded video made available by the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Aminu Tsanyawa, who confirmed the death toll, as well as the number of those hospitalized, he stated that out of 400 people hospitalized, 50 persons were undergoing treatment for kidney-related ailments.
The commissioner for health used the opportunity to advise residents to be vigilant when consuming any fruit juice especially during the ongoing Ramadan as various beverages will emerge for consumption so as to witness a healthy Ramadan season.
In his own words, he said, “As you are aware, the ministry of health had in the recent past announced the outbreak of a strange disease traceable to the consumption of a substandard drink.
“The consumption of this fake and substandard product has telling effects on the kidney and other vital organs of the body.
“Due to excessive heat that coincides with Ramadan, there is a possibility for high patronage of juices; I want to use this opportunity to caution residents to be on the watch-out.”
A reliable source who hinted Marketing Edge, confirmed that an unwholesome popular juice identified as Piara Juice, was alleged to be the poisonous juice responsible for the sad event.
Our source added that the State government has taken an immediate action by mopping up the dangerous product from different markets across the various local government areas of the state.
Meanwhile, residents have been urged to always ensure they check expiry dates of products before use. The state government urged residents to remain calm while assuring them that the government was on top of the situation.
