Twitter establishes presence in Africa, plants headquarters in Ghana
Twitter, one of the world’s leading Big Tech and American micro blogging and social networking service announced the establishment of its first presence in Africa, choosing Ghana as its home.
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey who made the news public via a tweet said: “Today, in line with our growth strategy, we’re excited to announce that we are now actively building a team in Ghana. To truly serve the public conversation, we must be more immersed in the rich and vibrant communities that drive the conversations taking place every day across the African continent.”
Controversies and back lashing erupted across the social media platform when former Nigeria presidential aspirant Adamu Garba tweeted in response to the announcement: “I pray Ghana would not allow their country to be used as a platform for the orchestration of nuisance on the African internet space. Nigeria is safer with the hypocrisy of Twitter. We shall have to improve on our methods for elimination of fake news on the information space.”
“They just hate Nigeria because they know that the only country that can be the next African super power, fully democratic, highly mobile population and good working age population is Nigeria. Twitter came to Ghana to target Nigerian market. They won’t admit they need us, but we know.”
It should be recollected that Adamu Garba had recently sued the Big tech for supporting the #EndSARS protests, although he later withdrew the case.
Speaking on why Twitter made Ghana its choice location, Jack Dorsey explained: “As a champion for democracy, Ghana is a supporter of free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet, of which Twitter is also an advocate. Furthermore, Ghana’s recent appointment to host The Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area aligns with our overarching goal to establish a presence in the region that will support our efforts to improve and tailor our service across Africa.”
Ghana’s President, Nana Akufo Ado expressed his gratitude while stating that the choice of Ghana as HQ for Twitter’s Africa operations is excellent news.
“The Government and Ghanaians welcome very much this announcement and the confidence reposed in our country. As I indicated to @Jack in our virtual meeting of 7th April 2021, this is the start of a beautiful partnership between Twitter and Ghana, which is critical for the development of Ghana’s hugely important tech sector.”
