Court Halts DStv New Subscription Rate
Following a litigation brought before the hallowed temple of justice, a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has ordered pay-tv giant, Multichoice, the parent company and owner of Africa’s biggest satellite pay television brand, Digital Satellite Television popularly known as DStv to immediately halt the implementation of their new subscription fees.
Justice C J Aneke made this declaration on April 2, 2015 while granting an order of interim injunction, stopping Multichoice from enacting their new policy following a suit filed against the company by Adebayo Osasuyi and Oluyinka Oyeniji, DSTV subscribers and legal practitioners.
The judge asked parties to maintain status quo in support of the motion ex parte with an affidavit of urgency sworn to by the plaintiff. Both legal practitioners are challenging the arbitrary increase in tariffs as well as urging the Honourable Court to order the National Broadcasting Commission – the 2nd Defendant, to implement Pay-Per-View where subscribers choose their programmes and pay as they watch which is being implemented all over the world.
MultiChoice, owners of DStv and GOtv, had announced a 20 percent price increase for all its satellite pay TV bouquets in Nigeria to take effect from April 1, 2015. According to them, the annual price increase, usually in-line with inflation, is necessary for it to continue offering the best in local and international entertainment to its subscribers.
The case has been adjourned to April 16, 2015 for hearing at the same court.
