NCDMB, Rungas open LPG cylinder plant in Alaro city
Nigeria will become the world’s largest producer of composite gas cylinders with the official inauguration of Nigeria’s Rungas ALFA plant at Alaro city.
RunGas Group, a Nigerian gas infrastructure company pioneering the deeper penetration of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) across Africa, has expanded its operations in Nigeria by locating its new composite cylinder manufacturing facility in Alaro City, Lagos State’s new city in the Lekki Free Zone.
The RunGas plant will be used for the integrated manufacturing of LPG cylinders, gas storage, bottling and distribution. Following January’s launch of the largest ready-to-eat therapeutic foods factory in Africa, built by Ariel Foods FZE, in Alaro City, more than 20 businesses have signed up to establish their presence in the new satellite city.
The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Nigeria, H.E. Timipre Sylva, officially inaugurated the plant recently.
With this step, Nigeria is set to become the world’s largest producer of composite gas cylinders, in which a joint effort by its sister plant in Bayelsa state will allow for the production of approximately 1.2 million cylinders every year.
Speaking at the inauguration, Sylva stated that the cylinder plant will go a long way in achieving the mission of the federal government to diversify the nation’s oil and gas industry through the strategic exploitation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Compressed Natural Gas.
While commending the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) and emphasizing the role of cylinder gases as a significant element of the LPG chain, Sylva stated that the production facilities will also provide jobs for the Nigerian citizens.
The Executive Secretary of NCDMB, Engr. Simbi Kesiye Wabote, revealed that the project is expected to be completed in one year
Wabote said: “Our handshake with the Rungas Group will catalyze the transition away from the heavy metallic LPG cylinders; it will also address the issue of high importation of LPG cylinders with the attendant economic losses.”
Additionally, the Chief Executive Officer, Rungas Group, Mr. Lanre Runsewe, commended the Board for its move towards the production of local cooking gas cylinders.
“As we make progress on our goal of increasing the use of LPG in Nigeria and Africa, such partnerships with business-friendly locations like Alaro City are critical. This project is in line with the federal government’s policy aspirations for the gas sector, as encapsulated in the National Gas Policy, and also aligns with the 2019-2023 Priority Project Deliverables of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources vis a vis clusters for gas resource, rapid growth of the LPG market, development of supporting LPG infrastructure, investment and domestic growth.”
“This new facility in Alaro City, located within a Free Trade Zone, will not only boost our local capacity for LPG cylinders but also further position Nigeria as a powerhouse within the continent.”
