Volkswagen partners Redwood to expand battery recycling

Legacy auto brand Volkswagen has partnered with Redwood Materials to provide customers convenient access to battery and rechargeable device recycling at their local VW dealership. The collaboration between Volkswagen Group of America and Redwood kicked off last year with a strategic recycling deal for all Volkswagen and Audi electric vehicle battery packs, and a shared vision to create a circular EV economy.
The program started with a soft launch at the VW booth at the New York International Auto Show, officially kicking off on Earth Day this year. Fourteen VW dealerships will offer it initially, with plans to expand it over the next year.
“Volkswagen’s goal is to provide more accessible and more sustainable electric mobility for American drivers,” Savvas says in a release.
The Volkswagen Group brands plan to introduce more than 25 new battery electric vehicles to American consumers through 2030, with the Group aiming for 55% of its U.S. sales to be fully electric by 2030.
By engaging the dealer network, Volkswagen is providing access for consumers to contribute to sustainable mobility, says Andrew Savvas, executive vice president, chief sales and marketing officer, Volkswagen North American Region.
The dealerships will offer Redwood bins for easy drop off of rechargeable batteries and consumer devices, including cell phones, laptops, tablets, cordless power tools, and electric toothbrushes.
Redwood’s technology can recover more than 95% of the critical minerals from batteries such as nickel, cobalt, lithium, and copper. The metals are then manufactured into battery components supplied to U.S. battery manufacturers for new electric vehicles and energy storage products.
