Netizens kick against Multichoice’s new price hike

Citing an increase too many, netizens have kicked against Multichoice’s planned increase for its DStv and Gotv networks.
Multichoice recently announced via a notification to its subscribers that beginning from May 1st 2024, it will review upward its subscription charges for its two networks.
But Netizens have called on the Federal government to intervene and halt the proposed increase.
According to them, Multichoice increased the price of its subscription package just five months ago, and it still wants to adjust to rate as contained in their mails.
The mail reads: “On Wednesday, 1 May 2024, we will adjust our prices across all our packages on DStv and GOtv. We understand the impact this change may have on you – our valued customer, but the rise in the cost of business operations, has led us to make this difficult decision.
“It remains our mission to provide the best entertainment and viewing experience to you and are committed to continuing to deliver high-quality content and unparalleled service.”
Here are some of the reactions from netizens calling on the federal government to intervene over the constant price increases or licence other cable businesses to operate in Nigeria.
Henry MD (Don P) with handle @donpanacio: “Is time federal government and Federal lawmakers (Both Senate and House of Rep) looked into this long standing foreign owned “SCAM” called Multichoice! They are taking big advantage of poor Nigerians! Don’t forget that Airpace decisive move brought down flight prices across the board!
@GallantDalentian said, “Multichoice Increases Price on DStv and GOtv Packages with effect from 1st May 2024. A premium DStv subscription is now more than a minimum wage earner’s salary.”
@isrealadetona24 noted: “Multichoice’s announcement of price adjustments on DStv and GOtv packages sparks questions as the naira strengthens against the dollar. DSTV’s monopoly in Nigeria needs some serious competition! It’s time to shake up the status quo and demand better options for quality entertainment.”
He cited an example of how Air Peace owned by Allen Onyema, a Nigerian business man was able to break the monopoly in the aviation sector.
@NGRTrends wrote: “When are we going to have an Airpeace of the Cable Tv business in Nigeria? The monopoly by DSTV is spanning to 2 decades.”
@adeh_21 asked: “Is the tax of this company also increasing after each increment? The economic downturn and cost of business affects us all, so @DStvNg should not further increase the hardship of the ordinary citizens who just seek to be entertained.”
@nellymike2013 noted that if there were competitors DStv would reconsider their constant increment policy.
His post read: “Since there is no competition, they will continue to increase it and viewers will still pay for it. We will just rant for nothing, until there is a competition; we are just going to rant for ranting sake.”
@Ugochukwu_96 wrote: “At this rate, the government needs to intervene because this is not fair on Nigerians. They just keep increasing the prices of their subscriptions without any tangible reason for doing so. How many channels are even interesting on DSTV to warrant paying such high amounts? They should just make it Pay as you go, so people don’t have to be paying for unnecessary channels that they don’t watch.”
@Saminboi1 said: “25,000 for champions League. How will viewing centers realize profit? In the last two years the price of subscription have tripled.”
It would be recalled that, while announcing the adjustment of prices on both its DStv and Gotv package via mail, Multichoice Nigeria said it’s due to cost of business operations.
Also, Multichoice announced price adjustment in November 2023 and in less than sixty month another upward adjustment has been announced.
