U.S Senate run-off election ad expenditure hits all-time high at $700m
Georgia’s Senate races have turned out to be an epochal ad war as advertising expenditure skyrockets past the $700 million mark. This total excludes the other costs that go into a political campaign, making it one of the most unusual election campaigns in the history of the United States, which a new administration’s transition runs and survives all booby traps.
David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler are the republican incumbents, up against democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock in races that have major national implications. With Trump in full support for Sens. Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue, President-elect Joseph R. Biden’s message was direct as he stated his full need and support for Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff.
According to Kantar’s report, the Republican media spend amounted to $388.6million; Democrat, $312.5million; others, $1.3million – altogether summing up to an unbelievable $702.3million.
Over $133 million spent on TV and radio advertising in Senate races so far; Jon Ossoff’s campaign dropped $89.2 million on advertising; Republican incumbent, U.S. Sen. David Perdue has spent $49.6 million on ads; Democrat Raphael Warnock’s ad spending reached a $78.5 million mark; Republican incumbent Kelly Loeffler’s ad spending now stands at $49.4 million.
Democrats have pulled off a Senate win in Georgia as Democrat Raphael Warnock defeated Loeffler, with another win most likely to follow; although the parties need to win both races in order to control the affairs of the Senate.
As at press time, the Democratic Party US President-elect Joe Biden is on the verge of taking control of the Senate as results come in from two elections in Georgia. With 98% of votes counted, US Tv networks and Associated Press according to BBC reports, called the first of the two races for Mr Warnock.
Control of the Senate in the first two years of Mr Biden’s term will be determined by the outcome of the second run-off BBC reported.
Meanwhile, the transition plan to usher in the Joe Biden Presidency has continued to survive all booby traps put in place by the defeated incumbent President Donald Trump.
After suffering several courts defeats and suits dismissal over baseless fraud claims by the out-going president Trump, he had gone ahead to recruit his Vice-President, Mike Pence to decertify the victory of Joe Biden. This again failed as Pence has opted to be his own person by following the part of honour.
Sources at White House revealed that the pressure being put on Mike Pence by Donald Trump was “shameful”.
