VFD Microfinance Bank has appointed Nonso Kenneth Okoye as its new Managing Director, bringing more than two decades of banking, risk management and financial services experience to the leadership of the institution.

The appointment signals a new phase for the bank as it seeks to strengthen its operations, drive innovation and deepen the value it delivers to customers. Okoye joins VFD Microfinance Bank after a lengthy career with Standard Chartered, where he held senior leadership positions across Nigeria and Central Africa.

Most recently, he served as Chief Operating Officer, Corporate and Investment Banking Coverage at Standard Chartered in Cameroon between September 2020 and December 2025. In that capacity, he coordinated business execution and operational performance across Cameroon, Gabon, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Equatorial Guinea.

He also played a central role in the transition of Standard Chartered’s Cameroon operations to Access Bank Cameroon, helping to coordinate the process while maintaining regulatory compliance, operational continuity and timely execution.

Before moving to Central Africa, Okoye built extensive experience within Standard Chartered’s Nigerian operations. He served as Head of Process, Risk and Governance and Chief Operating Officer for Global Banking, where he managed frameworks covering governance, risk, compliance and operational effectiveness.

His earlier assignments included leadership responsibilities across client coverage, origination, risk management, financial markets and business operations.

He also worked as a Senior Credit Analyst and Business Operational Risk Manager, adding further depth to his understanding of financial institutions and their risk environments.

Beyond banking, Okoye began his professional career in consulting, working with KPMG and Arthur Andersen in roles spanning assurance, business advisory, risk analysis and financial reporting.

His career has also attracted recognition for leadership and performance. Among his achievements are a Group CEO Recognition Award and the CEO’s “Going the Extra Mile” Award, which recognised his role in successfully leading the unbundling of Standard Chartered’s Debt Capital Markets business in Nigeria.

With this breadth of experience, Okoye takes over at VFD Microfinance Bank at a time when financial institutions are increasingly navigating changing customer expectations, digital transformation and the need for stronger operational efficiency.

His appointment therefore places his experience in banking transformation, governance, risk and business execution at the centre of VFD Microfinance Bank’s next phase of growth. The bank said his leadership will support its ambition to pursue growth and innovation while creating greater value for its customers.
