Children’s Day 2024: Experts harp on need to harness data for safer future

Every 27th of May, Nigeria joins other countries around the world to celebrate international Children’s Day, a day specially set aside to honour and advocate for rights and wellbeing of children. This year’s event was not an exception.
All through the day, there were various activities, programmes and initiatives organized by different organisations and brands to commemorate the day.
Similarly, there were brands felicitations and good will messages in form of theme advertising campaigns of different forms and shapes that heralded the unique day which Children all over the world look forward to.
In commemorating the day, data analysts have identified the need to ensure safer and healthier future for the young ones, observing that one of the tools required to achieve this goal is data gathering and analytics.
Experts in the industry observed that, by “harnessing data potential, it is possible to create effective strategies that will improve children’s lives, insisting that it is an indispensable asset in the modern world that identifies issues, tracking progress and formulating solutions about their welfare.”
According to Seyide Wusu, a Research Manager at Communications and Marketing Research Group Limited (CMRG), data plays a crucial role for individuals who engage in promoting the wellbeing of children, saying parents utilize data to make well-informed decisions regarding the upbringing of their children, particularly in relation to health and safety measures.
“Community organizations like NGOs benefit from community-level data by pinpointing areas with heightened risks for children, creating advocacy or intervention initiatives, and conducting evaluations of the effectiveness of these interventions.
“Furthermore, governmental bodies rely on data as a cornerstone for formulating policies, guiding resource distribution, and overseeing the progress and efficacy of intervention schemes,” he stated
Also sharing her views, Mrs. Kemi Osoba, Lead Consultant and Managing Partner, Camille Market Insight Limited, stated that data is needed to save children from every form of abuse.
In her words: “The usage of data in child protection is very important. It is needed to identify the need and solution to that need in the life of the child. Be it domestic abuse, sexual abuse, education or welfare, data is very critical to determine what the issues are and solution to those issues.
“So it is very important to get the correct data to be able to provide the right guardiance and solution. It is also needed for a child to be safe from parental, teacher’s and relative abuse, or lack of healthcare. As vulnerable specimen, there is a need for accurate data to keep children safe. Making decisions that will affect the life of children is not something to be toyed with. We need data to be accurate with what we are doing in the life of children. Anything outside this is like gambling which can be very costly and regrettable in the long run.”
As children’s day is celebrated worldwide, it is essential to recognize the transformative power of data in shaping a safer future for them. Embracing data and technology responsibly is the right step in building a world where every child thrives, free from harm and full of opportunities.
