Throwback Thursday: Common first aid /over counter medications of old

First aid is the first and immediate assistance given to any person with either a minor or serious injury or accident, with care provided to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, or promote recovery from a serious condition prior to professional medical help being available. It also includes initial intervention in the treatment of common ailments such as aches, pains, and sprains.
Our throwback for this week is on medications that may be found in almost all homes in Nigeria in the oldies as first-line attacks in the event of sickness or accident. Though some of them are no longer on the shelves, they remain evergreen in our minds and bring nostalgic memories of our growing-up years.

Daga Tablets: used to relieve mild to moderate pain from a headache, toothache, cold, flu, joint pain, or period pain, Daga was popular in the 80s and 90s. This medicine works by reducing the activity of certain chemicals in the body to provide pain-relieving effects. Daga is also used to reduce fever. This medicine reduces fever by increasing the loss of heat from the body.
Dewitt’s Aspirin: was used to reduce fever and relieve mild to moderate pain from conditions such as muscle aches, toothaches, common cold, and headaches. It may also be used to reduce pain and swelling in conditions such as arthritis. Aspirin is known as a salicylate and a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by blocking a certain natural substance in your body to reduce pain and swelling. Consult your doctor before treating a child younger than 12 years.
Orheptal Blood Tonic: is used for Iron deficiency anemia, Vitamin B3 deficiency, Arthritis, High blood pressure, Leg pain due to blocked arteries, Heart attack, Chest pain, High cholesterol, Diarrhea, Alzheimer’s disease, and other conditions.
Alabukun: The Alabukun brand is one of the longest-running, indigenous pharmaceutical brands in Africa, gaining widespread use over the last 100 years and becoming part of Nigerian fabric, without significant marketing or advertising budgets in recent decades. Alabukun was founded by a Nigerian pharmacy apprentice and entrepreneur, Jacob Sogboyega Odulate in 1918, a period when Aspirin-caffeine (headache) powder brands were just starting to spring up in the United States.
Wate-On: this is a dietary supplement that provides a valuable source of extra calories, carbohydrates, fats, and vitamins. Regular Wate-On helps to correct dietary deficiencies and promote weight gain, as well as enhance general bodily health, stimulating the appetite, and aiding digestion. This dietary supplement is taken in addition to normal healthy meals. Wate-on contains weight-building and energy-producing substances. It helps to solve under-weight problems caused by poor appetite and eating habits.
TCP: was introduced in 1918. The brand name comes from its original chemical name, which was trichlorophenylmethyliodosalicyl Trichlorophenylmethyliodosalicyl was replaced as the active ingredient by a mixture of phenol and halogenated phenols in the 1950s. TCP contains halogenated phenols, which help fight infection and provide relief for various ailments. It can be used for internal infections, such as colds, flu, and sore throats, and external problems like boils, acne, cuts, and grazes. TCP liquid can be used to treat, Sore throats, Mouth ulcers, Cuts, grazes, bites, and stings, Boils, spots, and pimples.
Chloroquine: was a medication primarily used to prevent and treat malaria in areas where malaria remains sensitive to its effects. Certain types of malaria, resistant strains, and complicated cases typically require different or additional medication.
Phensic Tablet: manufactured by Glaxo Wellcome, now GlaxoSmithKline consumer PLC, was used to reduce fever and mild to moderate pain from a headache, menstrual periods, cold, toothache, or muscle ache. This medicine works by reducing the effects of a chemical in the body that causes fever. Phensic is also used to relieve pain associated with inflammation or long-lasting degeneration of joints caused by osteoarthritis. It is also used to reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke in patients who have a history of heart disease or stroke-associated symptoms. This medicine works by preventing the formation of clots in the blood vessels. This medicine helps by making blood flow smoothly throughout the heart.
Zaiki After 5 Powder: marketed by Orange drugs Group, is a fast relief medicine for Fever, Pain, Rheumatic fever, Rheumatoid arthritis, and minor aches and pains. Composed of Acetaminophen, Acetylsalicylic Acid, and Caffeine, Zaiki provides quick effective pain relief.
Sudrex Joint and Muscle Pain: this is a fast relief medicine for your body pain. The combination of Paracetamol, Ibuprofen, and Caffeine, helps to relieve pain in joints and muscles without drowsiness.
Cafenol; belonged to the Analgesic-Antipyretic class of medicines and is used to treat painful conditions such as headache including migraine, which is characterized by a recurrent headache ranging in severity from moderate to severe, toothache, backache, pain, and inflammation in the joints (rheumatic pain), painful monthly cycles (dysmenorrhoea) and fever (febrile conditions). It is also used to relieve the symptoms of colds, flu, and sore throat.
APC Plus tablet: was popular for the relief of pain, headaches, Influenza, Muscle and joint pain, Common cold, Fever, and Pharyngitis.
Boska: is an effective pain and fever reliever with no bitter aftertaste.
Contac 12-Hour (Oral): hose generic name is pseudoephedrine, which is in the class of decongestants. It is used to relieve nasal or sinus congestion caused by the common cold, sinusitis, hay fever, and other respiratory allergies. It is also used to relieve ear congestion caused by ear inflammation or infection.
Epsom salt: Epsom salt is a popular remedy for many ailments. People use it to ease health problems, such as muscle soreness and stress. It’s also affordable, easy to use, and harmless when used appropriately. Epsom salt is also known as magnesium sulfate. It’s a chemical compound made up of magnesium, sulfur, and oxygen. It gets its name from the town of Epsom in Surrey, England, where it was originally discovered.
Sloan’s Liniment: this was the go-to medication for pain and stiffness, such as from sore muscular aches and strains, or arthritis. It was a regular candidate on school First Aid boxes and in homes. The warmth it generates within the muscle of the area when applied made it a darling for us during our growing up years.
