Shoprite set to open new branch
Africa’s largest food retailer, Shoprite, is set to open a new branch in Nigeria. The location of the new shop will be Lekki Mall at Monastery Road, Novare Lekki Mall, Monastery Road off Lekki-Epe Expressway, Sangotedo. Customers would begin to enjoy this shopping experience from Thursday, August 25th, 2016.
The Sangotedo branch brings to seven the number of Shoprite shops in Lagos. Others are in Surulere, Maroko, Apapa, Ikeja, Festac and Lekki.
Since December 2005 when they opened their first store in Lagos, Shoprite has launched an additional 17 stores across eight states in the Federation including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja employing over 2,000 people.
Since it started out as a small chain of supermarkets in 1979, Shoprite gained valuable experience from selling to the emerging market. Today, the Shoprite chain remains the core business of Shoprite Holdings and its main brand.
Shoprite’s strategy is to operate a chain of modern supermarkets where customers can be sure to pay our low prices on their basic food and household requirements.
As such, Shoprite has expanded into the African market outside of South Africa. It has grown from one store in Lusaka, Zambia in 1995, to more than 103 stores in 15 countries today. The South African operation comprises 400 supermarkets in the Shoprite brand.
In their bid to support Nigerian businesses, Shoprite has built relationships with over 300 leading Nigerian suppliers, small businesses and farmers, securing a wide assortment of local brands.
