Photojournalists capable of putting Nigeria on global map – Ashiru

Bimbola Ashiru, Chairman, Odu’a Investment Company Limited, said that the Nigerian photojournalists, if given access to the right infrastructure and opportunity, will flourish and are capable of putting the country on the global map. He added that an enabling environment will help the photojournalism practitioners unlock new pathways and live up to their potential.
Otunba Ashiru stated this in an exclusive interview with MARKETING EDGE at the recently concluded Guild of Photojournalists of Nigeria Conference, Exhibition and Awards held at the historic Lagos Country Club, Ikeja, Lagos.
“Our photojournalism will be well positioned if they get the necessary support. What we need is the infrastructure and necessary support. I can say Nigeria is technologically evolving and remains one of the best countries where opportunities abound. That is why many foreigners keep coming. We just need to take advantage of what we have and ensure that we harness it for our good,” he said.
He emphasised the need to have an enabling business environment and also acknowledged that members of the Guild have a huge role to play, and so, must hone their skills effectively as custodians of memories to enable them earn people’s trust.
“Being a photojournalist clearly shows that you are the one who expresses what goes on, you help to define people’s mood through your storytelling. Photography illustrates so many things about people, especially their emotional state of mind. So, it is key in bringing back people’s memories, both the good and the bad. Photojournalism is one of the key factors of journalism. When you take a look at several newspaper headlines, you will see how people struggle for space. It is because they understand the value and importance of the profession.
The former Ogun State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry urged members of the Guild to be more professionally disciplined and also seek the support of other stakeholders.
“Across the globe, pictorial explanation is very key; it is just like tea without sugar. If you don’t have a photojournalist, there is no way you can enjoy journalism. That is why I am associating with them. The best thing is that you must get the blessings and support of your people, but they must be disciplined to enable their positioning,” he said.
