OAAN backs bill for chartered body in OOH media

The Out-of-Home Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN) has expressed its support for the proposed bill seeking to establish a chartered body for organizations involved in Out-of-Home media ownership, such as billboard operators.
This move aims to bring orderliness, guidelines, and professionalism to the sector, promoting growth and sanity in the industry.
The association said it is backing the legislation, to demonstrates its commitment to promoting a more regulated and organized OOH advertising landscape in Nigeria.
In an exclusive interview with MARKETING EDGE, Sola Akinsiku, the President of the Out-of-Home Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN) shed more light on the recent developments surrounding the industry.
He explained that a bill is currently before the Nigerian Senate, seeking to establish a chartered body for the Out-of-Home (OOH) advertising practice.
According to him, the proposed legislation aims to restrict ownership and management of OOH media to only those within the chartered group.
However, OAAN’s president revealed that as a representative in the Heads of Advertising Sectoral Groups (HASG), that OAAN was not invited to the meeting where the decision to oppose the bill was made.
He emphasized that OAAN was not part of the decision-making process.
“We categorically state that OAAN was not involved in HASG’s decision to reject the bill. We did not participate in any meeting where this issue was discussed or a decision made.”
To clarify the matter further, Akinsiku said,
“We firmly believe the proposed Chartered status benefits our practice, business, and the industry by
Protecting Out-of-Home media assets from attack and prevention of environmental cluttering.We reiterate our dissociation from HASG’s opposition statement and reaffirm our support for the bill.”
He explained that the proposed chartered body will not affect other sectors, such as Media planners and buyers or creative but rather ensure that Out-of-Home members operate with professionalism and adhere to guidelines, enhancing the overall industry.
“OAAN believes in the bill’s potential to bring sanity and growth to the sector, and therefore welcomes and embraces it.”
