NIPR canvasses FG’s support on membership licence
The Federal Government has been called upon to lend its support and recognition to the course of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) in its efforts aimed at ensuring that Public Relations practitioners in public and private sector establishments were fully registered and licensed by the institute.
The institute says government must accord the well deserved recognition by ensuring that members of the institute are engaged in the management of strategic communications
Giving the advice recently was President of the Institute, Mukhtar Sirajo, while speaking in an exclusive interview with MARKETING EDGE in Lagos.
According to the Institute’s boss, a situation whereby the laws establishing the institute are not well respected and accorded well deserved recognition could be very discouraging; hence he said government needed to show its backing by ensuring that more members of the institute are engaged to manage its strategic communications.
Sirajo who commended performance of the institute and the PR industry in general, especially during the course of the outgoing year 2019, further disclosed plans by the institute to collaborate with some governmental agencies towards organising a national reputation summit to address current relationship challenges bedeviling the country.
“I think we have not done badly both at the institute and in the PR industry in Nigeria. The only thing is that we appeal for greater engagement of our members by the system. For now all we want the government to do is to respect the law that established the NIPR and ensure that everybody that is practicing public relations in Nigeria is a member of the institute and is licensed by the institute,” he said.
He added that the institute was partnering with similar public relations organisations abroad with a view to leveraging world best practices in the profession.
“Yes, of course, we are talking with sister African public relations associations. Recently I was in the U.S. where we held discussions with so many other national associations. I was also in Kenya last month where I attended the summit of the Public Relations Society of Kenya, and the Heads of the public relations of East Africa were all there and we had very, very productive meetings with them and build on the foundation that we have laid down,” he said.
