McMedal wins Lagos NIPR polls
It is the dawn of a new dispensation at the Lagos State Chapter of Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) as a new chairman was on Thursday night elected. The election which held at HOCAL suites of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Yaba saw CEO of Upticomm Marketing Company, Olusegun McMedal, being voted as the Chairman.
McMedal, who contested against the immediate past chairman, Joseph Okonmah whose second term election was annulled in July 2015 by the national body, got 50 out of 79 votes.
However, the third contestant, Rev Olushola Niyi who was the chairman of the caretaker committee of the Lagos chapter after Okonmah’s reelection was aborted in July 2015, was disqualified before the election.
His disqualification is believed to have been based on the inability of his committee to deliver on certain standards in which the committee was set.
Meanwhile, other positions were occupied unopposed and they are Mrs. Comfort Nwankwo as Vice-Chairman, Thelma Okon as Secretary, Oladapo Soneye as Assistant Secretary and Kali Olekauwa as Treasurer.
In his victory remark, the new chairman of the chapter appealed to everyone practicing public relations in Lagos to come back to rebuild the institute.
“McMedal is not the winner but PR and the institute. We should all work together to ensure we uphold the ethics of the good profession,” he said.
The election was to hold on Thursday, February 25th but was rescheduled to March 10th, 2016. The two-week postponement came as a surprise to industry stakeholders as everything was said to have ready for the event. However, there were speculations that the postponement came because the President of NIPR, Dr. Rotimi Oladele was out of town.
McMedal is a 1997 Sociology/Public Administration from University of Ilorin. He also has a PGD in Journalism from the Times Journalism Institute, as well as a Diploma in Public Relations from the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations. He worked in various departments at CMC Connect (Perception Managers) before establishing Upticomm Marketing Company Limited in 2012 where he sits as President, Communications & Marketing Strategy.
