McDonalds closes down its restaurants around Russia
McDonalds, a popular Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) brand selling burgers and fries, announced that it is leaving Russia after over 30 years of service in the country due to the Russia-Ukraine war.
McDonalds established their first restaurant in Russia on January 31, 1990. As at march 2022, the restaurant reopened after a temporary suspension during the war.
In a letter sent to all employees that the company has decided to leave Russia, Chris Kempczinski, founder of McDonalds, said: “We can argue that providing food and employing tens of thousands of staff is a good thing to do, but it is not right to ignore the humanitarian crisis caused by Russia during the war in Ukraine.”
McDonalds has put its restaurants in the market for sales, but said potential Russian buyers won’t be using its brand name or identity. As at last year, the restaurant had over 846 restaurants in Russia. It said closing its restaurant will cost $127 million dollars, $27 million payment from staff, lease and supplies and $100 million from food and from other items it will dump.
Mr. Kempczinsk, in his farewell message to the citizens of Russia, said: “Let us not end by saying goodbye but say till we meet again.”
