Josef Bel-Molokwu’s book will inspire other writings on advertising- Chief Olu Falomo
Nigeria’s advertising icon and former Chairman of Advertising Practitioners’ Council of Nigeria (APCON), Chief Olu Falomo has said that Josef Bel-Molokwu’s new book will encourage other writings on Nigerian advertising.
Chief Falomo made this remark on Thursday during the public presentation and book penetration initiative of the former APCON Registrar’s latest book at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Media Centre in Lagos.
The event attracted some of the frontline practitioners in Nigerian advertising industry including Chairman Troyka Holdings, Biodun Shobanjo, CEO of SO&U Udeme Ufot, Mr. George Thorpe, Founder of MediaReach, who reviewed the book, Chairman of STB McCann Sir Steve Omojafor, Group Chief Operating Officer, Insight Redefini, Ken Onyali Ikpe, Emeka Opara of Airtel Nigeria and many others.
Speaking at the event Chief Falomo, who is now Chairman of Reckitt Benckiser Nigeria, said: “This book has added to the pile of knowledge available on the subject of advertising. So this is going to make a lot of difference. But it is a starting point because others are going to take off from here and build on such work.”
Bel-Molokwu who also seized the event to mark his 70th birthday, has equally played a leading role in the evolution of the Nigerian advertising. He was APCON Chief Executive in 1994 and presided over the industry as chief regulator until 2005. His reign saw rapid growth and development in the industry and this was reflected in the large turnout of advertising pathfinders and icons that showed up at the book launch to honour him.
According to the author, the book A Trilogy of Advertising “pays rich attention to the practice situation in Nigeria, dwelling deservedly on APCON and its health-giving part in the great growth of advertising in Nigeria.”
He noted that the book, which he started writing five years ago, also highlights important moments of advertising as well as some of the beacons of the growth. It equally chronicles a number of exceptional and memorable advertising campaigns whose image has lingered on the minds of consumers long after they were rested.
Also speaking at the occasion, APCON’s present Registrar, Alhaji Garba Bello Kankarofi said the book was a reflection of Bel-Molokwu’s inspiring journey in the world of advertising and communication.
“The book A Trilogy of Advertising which is being unveiled today, documents Bel-Molokwu’s years of study, research and work experience in the advertising industry. It is indeed a treatise in adverting, written from the vantage position of a scholar who has been involved t the highest level in the various facet of the advertising industry.
Apart from his time in advertising, Bel-Molokwu has been CEO of three newspaper organizations. He has been on the adjunct faculty of three universities and he is a senior fellow at the School of Media and Communications of the Pan-Atlantic University.
