How digital ads take center stage in Nigeria’s 2024 marketing landscape

By Seun Johnson

With the rapid growth of internet penetration and widespread use of mobile devices, digital advertising has firmly established itself as a cornerstone of the Nigerian marketing landscape.

This development was said to have been triggered by the consistent rise in the power and influence of various social media platforms that form a convergence to create a fertile and viable ground for advertisers to connect with their target audience.

In the first of 2024, digital advertising reportedly witnessed an unprecedented growth in Nigeria, driven by both technological advancement and changing consumer behaviours.

According to the report released by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in June, digital advertising expenditure in Nigeria 2024 surged by over 30% compared to the same period in 2023.

This growth, which is attributed to the increasing number of internet users by mid-2024, reflects the growing confidence of brands in the effectiveness of online advertising.

While more Nigerians glue to their mobile devices and spend more time online, brands have recognized the need to shift their marketing strategies from traditional to digital channels. And Social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and others have become essential tools for reaching a younger, and more digitally-savvy audience.

This shift to digital ad has been quite transformative, with several small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), reaping huge benefits from the affordability and accessibility of online platforms.

With limited budgets, many SMEs have turned to social media and search engine advertising to reach potential customers, resulting in increased brand visibility and sales.

Similarly, bigger corporations, have continued to intensify their digital advertising efforts, which consequently amplified their conversion rates and better return on investment (ROI).

No doubt, the rise of digital advertising has significantly altered how Nigerian consumers interact with brands. With access to a vast array of online content, consumers are now more informed and empowered than ever before.

They are also more active in seeking information about product and comparing prices before making purchasing decisions. This development has forced brands to become more transparent and customer-centric in their advertising strategies.

Notwithstanding the rapid growth in the Nigerian digital advertising landscape, its challenges are numerous. One of the most significant issues is the lack of reliable data on internet usage and consumer behavior.

While digital platforms offer robust analytics tools, the absence of comprehensive national data makes it difficult for brands to fully understand their audience and tailor their strategies accordingly.

The digital divide has posed a major barrier to the widespread adoption of digital advertising in Nigeria. While urban areas enjoy relatively high internet penetration, rural areas are terribly lagging behind due to infrastructure challenges and lower levels of digital literacy.

This disparity limits the reach of digital advertising campaigns and highlights the need for more inclusive strategies that can bridge the gap between urban and rural consumers.

Also, the issue of ad fraud, has continued to plague the industry globally. Ad fraud occurs when fraudulent practices, such as fake clicks or impressions, inflate the performance metrics of digital ads, leading to wasted ad spend and distorted campaign results.

Despite these challenges, the future of digital advertising in Nigeria holds significant promise. The second half of 2024 is expected to see further advancements in digital marketing technologies that offer new opportunities for businesses to connect with consumers.

The continued growth of mobile internet access, coupled with the expansion of 5G networks, will likely enhance the quality and reach of digital ads.

One critical area that is poised for growth is the use of artificial intelligence in digital advertising. In the coming days, these technologies can help brands create more personalized and effective campaigns that will improve the overall consumer experience.

As Nigeria navigates the second half of 2024, digital advertising continues to constitute a dynamic and powerful force in the country’s economy. While more businesses embrace digital platforms and consumers become more digitally engaged, the landscape of advertising in Nigeria will undoubtedly become more sophisticated, diverse, and impactful.
