Google set to counter ChatGPT with “Bard”

Poised to be in competition with the popular ChatGPT headed by Microsoft, Google is planning to launch its Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered chatbot called Bard which will be available to the public in the coming weeks.
A blogpost by Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, described the tool as an “experimental conversational AI service” that will answer users’ queries and take part in conversations. The software will be available to a group of “trusted testers” before becoming more widely available to the public in the coming weeks.
“Bard can be an outlet for creativity, and a Launchpad for curiosity, helping you to explain new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old, or learn more about the best strikers in football right now, and then get drills to build your skills.”
Pichai also notes that Bard “draws on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses,” suggesting it may be able to answer questions about recent events — something ChatGPT struggles with.
According to the blog, the experimental conversational AI service Bard is being powered by LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications), which was unveiled by Google two years ago. The CEO also added that Bard has the abilities of a combination of “power, intelligence and creativity of the company’s large language models.”
Bard will seek knowledge based on the responses provided by the users, as well as the information available on the web. The company is initially rolling out the AI system for testers along with a lightweight model version of LaMDA. The focus, for now, is diverted towards collecting feedback to make the AI system better for future applications.
ChatGPT has been in the news for becoming the fastest-growing consumer application in history, beating TikTok and Instagram. ChatGPT is estimated to have reached 100 million monthly active users in January, just two months after launch.
Apart from Bard, Google is also focused on supporting other reliable AI systems through Google Cloud partnerships. These AI systems include Cohere, C3.ai and Anthropic. It was recently reported that Google has invested almost $400 million.
