FCCPC warns consumers over fake online stores ahead of Black Friday sales
In a statement signed by its Executive Vice Chairman, Babatunde Irukera, and disseminated via X (formerly Twitter), the FCCPC highlighted concerning intelligence regarding the surge of fraudulent activities in anticipation of the annual discount event.
Expressing grave concern, the FCCPC revealed that there has been a notable surge, estimated at a staggering 135 percent, in the proliferation of sham online stores engaged in scams, misrepresentation, and other exploitative practices. Citing a survey conducted by Netcraft, a fraud-detection company, it was indicated that counterfeit online stores imitating well-known brands have shown a substantial increase.
In response to these alarming findings, the FCCPC issued a series of precautionary measures to safeguard Nigerian consumers during this period. The Commission advised the public to exercise vigilance and discernment while engaging in Black Friday sales. Emphasizing consumer rights, especially in relation to comprehensive and transparent disclosures, the FCCPC urged individuals to remain vigilant and cautious to prevent falling victim to fraudulent activities and other forms of exploitation.
Furthermore, the FCCPC strongly recommended that consumers exclusively transact on reputable and credible online platforms, warning against patronizing unfamiliar or dubious websites. The Commission stressed the importance of meticulousness and prudent decision-making to evade potential scams and exploitation.
This advisory from the FCCPC serves as a critical reminder for consumers to remain vigilant and proactive in ensuring their safety and security while navigating the Black Friday sales landscape. The Commission’s guidance underscores the significance of informed and cautious consumer behavior to combat the proliferation of fraudulent online practices during this period of heightened retail activity.
