Aníkúlápó, the 2022 Nigerian epic fantasy film produced by a renowned Nigerian filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan, has bagged the most nominations for the ninth edition of Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) with 16 nominations.
Followed by Shanty Town with 12 nominations and Battle of the Buka Street with 10 nominations, others on the list are also Brotherhood, Kayode Kasum’s Ile Owo, Mugisha Morris’ Tembele, and Winifred Mena-Ajakpovi’s ‘Four Four Forty-Four’, including hundreds of other movies to battle for the Best Overall Movie crown in Africa.
The awards, which celebrate African movie talents, will be a 3-day event starting with a cultural night to the runaway show and nominee gala. The main awards will be held on May 20, 2023. Of the announced categories, ten are opened to public votes, while others will be decided by the AMVCA panel of judges headed by veteran filmmaker Femi Odugbemi.
Commenting on the award, Executive Head of Content and West Africa Channels at MultiChoice Nigeria, Dr. Busola Tejumola, has said that this year’s Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) will be held between May 18th and 20th in Lagos, Nigeria.
According to Tejumola, “This year’s AMVCA will once again demonstrate our intentionality in spotlighting the tremendous talent we have in the African film and TV industry.”
This year’s edition, she revealed further, will see the return of the social media category which the fast-rising comedian, Sabinus, took home last year.
She said that the award tagged ‘Best Online Social Content Creator’ recognised the growing acceptance of content creators across Africa.
She explained that there were also categories like the Trailblazer and lifetime awards, often emotional wins.
“Fast-rising actors in the period under review will be looking forward to winning the trailblazer award, which will mark a major milestone in their career.
“On the other hand, the veterans and Nollywood fans will have their fingers crossed on the African movie legend the award show will be celebrating this year.
“The fashion-forward ‘Best-Dressed’ male and female categories will also return, and attendees will be looking to beat Osas Ighodaro and Denola Grey’s gorgeous looks from last year,’’ she said.
Veteran Nollywood actor Bolaji Amusan aka Mr Latin congratulated filmmaker Kunle Afolayan via his Instagram on his hit movie Anikulapo bagging 16 nominations at the AMVCA.

It was released on 30 September 2022, the film was shot in Oyo State and Afolayan has described the work as a Game of Thrones recreated in Nigeria but with a better representation of our culture (Yoruba culture).
